Can't speak for official 'atheism' but as a nonbeliever in whatever god people would be reaching out to in a typical religious funeral ceremony, I always think cremation just makes sense for practical reasons.

What's the point of reserving space on earth for millions of skull and bones to rot in for hundreds of years? Seems like an inefficient use of resources.

As far as the ceremony, that is for the living to decide.
So if I am dead and my friends and family want to mourn (or celebrate :bryan:) in whatever fashion they think is best, they can do that. Church, wake, no official ceremony. All good. It's their choice.

I don't like funerals at all. I find them to be weird and creepy. Especially open casket funerals. I'd rather party and celebrate a persons life then to mourn. I also hate how they try to play music at funerals that is sad, it's like they want you to cry. They're also ridiculously expensive. Just cremate my ass.

I like the cremation idea too
but you can still have a gathering
personally I always thought they turn part of the body into a diamond and use it as part of a shrine dedicated to the departed

Yeah, but its about what goes on at the gathering. I don't want anyone crying over my death or ruining someones day for having to go to my funeral. I want everyone to celebrate my life, drink, smoke, and be merry.

but what if they miss you? the sense of loss can only be cured by time
besides crying can be therapeutic and help provide closure

It's just not gonna be that way. People are gonna be sad if you die and are gonna wanna purge their negative feelings. Crying, reminiscing, sad music, etc. I have been to positive wakes before, but only if the person died old and happy and quickly, and that's not that common.

Bodies were buried because they smell. Over time we made more formal traditions surrounding the burial of the dead. Its a sentimental moment watching someone you love go into the ground. Thats the moment where everyone loses it and realizes that this is real, your loved one is gone and they're never coming back. Makes me sad, thinking about funerals. They say be strong and you trying but how how the heck can you be strong, when you see your pops crying.

To clarify, I don't have a problem with people naturally mourning me. I just don't like how funerals are literally a place where people go to mourn, I'd rather it be a positive celebration of my life. Idk, I'm also the type of person who mourns "on my own" and I like to handle stuff like that privately. Funerals are just such a negative experience (for me at least) that I don't want mine to be like that. Maybe it's unavoidable.

you are missing another important part of the ritual, that is the reaffirming of community bonds and the show of support for the grieving, all of that is needed. Mourning death can be lonely and isolating, the funeral can let grievers know that they are not alone and there are shoulders to lean on when the need comes.

why a funeral and not just a family gathering?
because symbolism and rituals respectively remains the motif and lexicon of mystery
death is a time when the mystery of life must be faced
there is little logic for those moments
they are the stuff of wonder and awe
we know what happens to flowers when we leave them at the graves
yet we do it again repeatedly because nothing satisfies the mystery, it is noumenal.

Take whatever organs are useful. Cremate the rest.
As far as a funeral, I'll leave that up to my family to do whatever they're comfortable with. :manny:

Won't hurt my feelings, because I'll be dead.
