PlayStation's upcoming platforming celebration, Astro Bot, is already launching with roughly 80 levels. But there will be even more on the way later, via free DLC.

Speaking to IGN, Team Asobi studio head Nicolas Doucet told us there were plans for eventual free DLC for Astro Bot, coming "soon" after launch. He says it will be based around adding more challenge levels to the game – shorter levels focused on specific platforming challenges – but that won't be the only component.

Doucet told us that PlayStation "completely opened the doors" to whatever characters Team Asobi wanted to include in the game, and internal studios even sent requests pouring in for their characters to be featured.

Summer of previews

Astro Bot | Summer Game Fest Previews:

• Same tight, responsive controls
• 6 large galaxies. Each consists of several planets with multiple levels per planet.
• Over 80 levels total
• Free DLC after launch
• Levels are ranked by difficulty (Easy, Normal, Hard)
• Hard difficulty will challenge even "seasoned platforming fans"
• Quick respawns after death
• Collect power-ups that give you new abilities; inflate your body to float, dash, etc
• Astro can swim underwater now
• Over 300 robots to find including over 150 iconic PlayStation cameos
• In-game menu shows you how many collectibles you've found on each level
• Excellent use of the DualSense; puzzles can be solved via haptics
• Physics objects to interact with all around the levels; paint buckets, snowballs, tall grass, etc
• Releasing September 6th exclusively on PS5
