The protagonist looks nearly legit Black as are some of the NPCs Some of the enemy guards at best look like Ptomely-era or Cleopatra-era Greco-Roman mulattoes, and since the story reportedly takes place around that time, I'm willing to let that slide

That's actually a great way to start. Would you like a brief description on what its about if you ever decide to start? I'd personally advise playing the first, but the second is also a good start if the first seems a bit boring since II just summarizes the whole thing in the beginning.

The entire plot is centrally focused on two factions that have been in an endless war with each other for millennia called the Assassins & Templars. Why do they fight?

Well, there are two reasons:

The first is over the direction in which Humanity should take. Assassins generally believe that free-will is the key, whereas the Templars are the opposite as they believe that they are the only ones capable of guiding "us". In later games, this distinction becomes a bit more blurred, but in the first games it's pretty easy to tell who are the "good" and "bad" guys here.

The second, is over the pursuit for ancient artifacts left by a lost race called The First Civilization ("First Civ", for short). The items themselves are called "Pieces of Eden" - said artifacts that hold unimaginable, (if not magical) power. The details regarding them are in the games.

The never-ending war has crossed into our time as a man by the name of Desmond Miles, a regular joe with Assassin ties, finds himself captured by the modern incarnation of the Templars.
That's where the story begins.
