Cost of living is a major issue in all major U.S. cities nowadays and people have to sacrifice to survive whether it’s getting a SO/spouse also bringing in an income and living together or having roommates and budgeting. One thing Ill counter with is, even IF someone can get a municipal job in the bay area that pays something lie 80k starting salary, they run into another problem which is affordable housing.
The Bay is a nightmare as far as finding something livable, under 2.5k a month that puts you close to Oakland. The West Coast has and WILL NEVER catch up to the East Coast in terms of affordable solutions for Working Class people in terms of housing projects and public transport. The mountains, ocean, exponential population increases, earthquakes, NIMBY-ism, and overall racism have historically been huge hurdles in making the West Coast more comfortable for poor people (I live in Seattle and the same reasons apply and more, the wealth gap may be even worse here).
Youre from NYC right? the Tri-State area has more negotiable geography and most importantly around 200+ years of dealing with vast numbers of immigrants pouring in and being in closer proximity to the cradle of the Nation meant resources could easily be divvied out. All that matters to this day in terms of how people respond to poverty.
Those jobs simply need to be filled it’s explains a lot of the dysfunction in the city and the alternative lifestyle isn’t any better.
