As nice as Cordae is, I can't get into his music

Rap been around 40+ years… Pretty much everything has been said at this point. From every region with every kind of production.
Exactly and That's why it's challenging. You got to be inventive and creative. We heard tons of mc's that could rap and tons that spit punchlines your got to make that shyt connect to people.

example:Cudi added harmony and started damn near yodeling and humming all over tracks. J Cole let you buy into his coming of age story, small town boy becoming the man and believing in his dreams(now others may have that story but they didn't make that their thing, they didn't sell it to you the way he did). Uzi dressed differently and broke rules. I could go on and on.

Tyler also came onto the scene as the leader of a crew with crazy shock value as his calling card.

Tyler was able to reinvent himself midway through his career. Cordae might be a ways away from doing that himself.

The shock value definitely got the attention, but his musicianship and visuals got him a fanbase. His first three albums telling a backwards story. It's shyt like that which has nothing to really do with rapping which will help an artist. I mentioned him as an example to say that dudes like Cordae are too one dimensional and need to expand their pallet as artists. He's not on a high enough technical level for him to soley rely on raps and also I think the era where you could get away with just rapping and having bars is over. A lot of the new non-industry plants coming in with their own sound production wise or they rap in a way that makes them stand out completely flow wise. I don't really hear that in Cordae

Could you elaborate further?

'Opportunistic snake' might be much, but I couldn't respect how he went about with that YBN situation. It felt like he couldn't wait to drop the 'YBN' from his name. Other than that, he also comes off hella corny and try-hard. The J. Cole track wasn't necessary. He kinda embodies the 'holier than thou' aspect I dislike about conscious rappers.

You can't compare him to Cole because Cole was able to rap from the perspective of the underdog in his era.

Cordae is just like the rest of this generation of artist except he isn't lying about what he's done or where he's from. He has no gimmick - for lack of a better word - to connect and build a fanbase. I blame his management and label, I'd have him making an album based on transitioning from regular life to enterntainment.

I think some of these suburb/non-street rappers need to take a page out of Tyler's book and get a bit more versatile and visually creative. I personally don't really fukk with Cordae cause I think he's an opportunistic snake, but there's nothing about Cordae that grabs me and makes me want to hear what he's talking about considering he's not at such a high technical level to where I want to hear him rap about anything.

I mentioned Tyler because as a rapper, he's super limited and his personal story isn't too different from the average black boy growing up in the suburbs, but he makes up for it by standing out musically (I guess being a producer helps), every album has a different visual/branding aesthetic and he knows how to tell a story/concept with his albums like they're indie movies and it's not on some typical street shyt or getting money and hoes type raps.

Dudes need to try be artists more and less rappers
a la, Pharrell, Kanye, Drake, etc.

It CAN be done.

Even Wale has a lane.

But then again, this is entertainment and dudes want participation trophies.

Rappers need strong branding and backstory and Cordae don’t have that he’s also too similar to early J. Cole rap style

Lil Baby for example his story of being taught how to rap by Gunna, being a dope boy, doing a bid young, coming out getting focused, the whole story of him flipping $60 into $100K in a dice game, Young Thug having to pay him to leave the streets and get in the studio shyt is movie-esque

People hate pop stars...but artist development is a thing

People hate gate keepers...but it keeps the quality higher...Soundcloud was a gift and a curse

:russell: Gave him another chance. This kid legit sucks

Some of the most boring and basic rhymes you’ll ever hear. He seems to get a ton of looks from artist who respect his craft but this shyt sucks.
