It's about what will be more entertaining.. eliminating the 3 won't stop them from chucking up shots 95% of the time.. they are chucking up 3s cause it takes less effort more so than points and that's how it appears to viewers which is why the ratings are in the toilets

NBA is more popular worldwide than it's ever been.
There are countries that couldn't access NBA games legally back in the days now being able to watch some of the games from their local television programs.
Also basketball is becoming more popular between the young people. Compare countries to what they looked like in 90s playing against Team USA, to now various international teams having not only stars, but superstars as well.
