They haven't lost half the audience.

There's more people who watch/follow NBA than ever before.

The only difference is how they're digesting it.

Cable has been on life support for a minute now and there are too many restrictions with League Pass, to where now [illlega] streaming has taken over. TV ratings are going to reflect that. There's also the fact that as a society we're much more shrewd with how we digest entertainment, given the abundance of it, where instead of watching a random Tuesday night NBA game, we'll just check the highlights (or box score) and instead play video games, or watch highlights from another sport, or stream a series/film or create your own content for others to watch.

Exactly.

Revenue matters, not ratings.

2011-2012 NBA revenue was $3.68B
2023-2024 NBA revenue was $11.34B

200% growth in 12 years.

Now I didn't want to get into that in particular, but as someone that has had all the sports channels legally or illegally...*lupe voice*.

They have always been casuals to me, they mostly were fans of the most popular team who was conveniently featured on national tv once a week. Were given hand delivered matchups to watch, and didn't give a damn about the rest of the league and was saying to contract them if a young player ended up on those teams because "ain't nobody gonna watch him on whatever bum ass team it is.

It's 82 games, you play the opposite conference twice, then however many games in your division. But you'll only watch if it's on Thursday night?? Sounds very very casual to me. Klay is returning to Golden State let's all watch tonight!!! So you need storylines now? Scust

nikkas didn't get league pass until 2k started including it. But all the ratings and disappointment in the league and what they need to improve the league threads can just be boiled down to "my favorite player out the league so I don't have a reason to watch. "
this is mostly facts.

And silver does nothing every other league does changes baseball pitch clock, mound visits . Cfb running clock

Players of today won't feel it but in the future when the tv deals are smaller and less fans going to games it will be some NHL hard cap
Silver let foul baiting, load management and player movement get out of control

Yeah the NBA came with different metrics than TV viewership; that’s how they got a bigger package than expected. I don’t even know if their decline in TV viewership is statistically alarming if you compared it to other sports, but even if it was, they’ve been pivoting more towards streaming/social media content for a grip.

That being said, I do think it’s way too many blowouts on a given night, anecdotally speaking. NBA has been behind both the NFL and MLB in terms of making tweaks to offense, which can be both a positive and negative depending on your POV.

Silver also clearly cares about basically everything other than the actual game on the court, which has been great for giving nikkas the bag and allowing the NBA sphere of influence to spread wider than it ever has, but the fact that it took shyt like that Kings-Clippers game last year for them to even consider allowing defenses to be more physical…they were just so fukking late to address foul grifting.

Sucks to regurgitate Bill Simmons talking points, but they clearly prioritize money and having the catalog of games for TV networks over quality of games. No one in the NBA outside of the top dogs want 82 games. I don’t care what dudes did 30 years ago, we’re at a point where they gotta look at what they got and adjust accordingly

the problem is inconsistent refereeing

the most important information before the game is not the injury report, its whose reffing

tony brothers?
scott foster?
zach zarba?

you can predict how the game will go down as soon as you see the refs.

they had a referee who was a lifelong celtics fan! and nothing fukking happened he just quit his job.

They need to incentivize mid range scoring.
Since the paint is 2 points and behind the three point line is 3 points, the logical evolution of the sport would be awarding 2.5 points for shots made between the paint and the three point line. That would give mid range scorers more power and encourage different styles of play.
I’d say make the 3 pt line 4 points and mid range’s 3 points but I like where you’re going

Even if it was a one game regular season, it's still the regular season and regular season games don't matter. So if you can get somebody to pay you billions of dollars for meaningless games why are we trying to change it .

Do you have metrics that actually prove this?

I don’t believe the NBA as a business would allow their main revenue source to be jeopardized by people stealing the product. And to have it happen on such a large scale as well.
he's only saying that because the nba is more accessed world wide

there is no way more people are watching these games in the states than ever before

But that's ok, and it's never getting better. So what are you supposed to do now
It could get better when players start competing against each other like they care and this will naturally develop rivalries, dynasties etc.. Right now the players are on chill mode cause they paid, got brands, don’t give af about the fans like that.
