Goku spent his childhood not knowing his race. When he first found out about his race it was through the filter of who they were post enslavement, who the white man, Frieza, wanted them to be. Goku rejected that because he wasn't brainwashed. When I say brainwashed I mean that literally. When Goku was in his ship on his way to Earth there was a programming loop being played telling him to destroy. If that was the sayains natural instinct, why would a baby being sent out alone to conquer need something like that?

Because that's not who they truly are it's who they were told to be.

If you watch DB Super you might know about the parallel universe where their original home world was never destroyed. Not planet Vegeta but their first home world. In that universe they were never enslaved by Frieza and they were still warriors but they fought for justice and the protection of others instead of being vicious and violent for no reason. In other words they were more like Goku.

Tldr: Goku is a Sayain that forgot his brainwashing and became more like a true Sayain.

Vegeta treated teenage Gohan with reverence and was disgusted with him post time skip. Vegeta repeatedly tried to appeal to the Sayian in Goc00n. He put Trunks on game about how to be a man and that funnels into Gohan (who wears the pants in that friendship).
