In isolation, if all you're talking about is a single stretch, then yes, that happens.
But if Klay from game to game is ONLY hitting his threes when Curry on the bench, and if the other teams keep scoring while he's on the court
Going -45 over two games in just 18 minutes is insanely poor for a lineup. But this isn't a two-game issue. It was an issue that stimulated Lebron demanding the front court bring in a second guy to run the office, it was an issue that was prominent even when they were playing well earlier this season, it was an issue that was brought up last season. Hell, it was the reason that Lebron played 46, 43, 43 and 47 minutes in the final four Finals games when shyt was tight last year. (Kyrie, for comparison, playing 36, 40, 39, 43.) You can't blame random chance over long time periods. Like GSH notes, you can blame lineups...but Kyrie has literally been working out well with NO lineup outside of
@CHICAGO is right, it leaves out all the important context of what's happening during the game when a player is on/off. It's fine using it as a foundaton
for lineups as a whole, (with a minimum set of minutes), but other than that it really doesn't tell you anythng about how much impact a player has while on court. It's far too generalized to just throw around in the manner of using it for individual players like that.
As opposed to Chicago, who would rather look at ppg? At the very least +/- tells you SOMETHING about how the offense and defense are performing while you're on the court. YES, context matters, as it does with every single stat. But with context, +/- is important.
Here's some context, since it is being begged for:
Heat game. Everyone available except Love and JR.
3 minutes left in the 1st, Lebron goes out and it’s 18-18.
Now Kyrie-Korver-Derrick Williams-TT-Frye. Heat go on immediate 11-4 run to close the quarter.
Lebron comes in for the 2nd, plays the next 18 minutes and is +4. He goes out with 6 minutes left in the 3rd.
Now Kyrie-Korver-Jefferson-Derrick Williams-TT, later replaced by Kyrie-Korver-Shump-Derrick-Frye. Heat go on immediate 20-5 run to close the quarter.
Lebron plays entire 4th quarter, is +10 during that time which only closes an 18-point lead to 8.
Lebron is +14 in 39 minutes, Kyrie -22 in the nine minutes with Lebron off floor.
Pistons game. Now JR is back.
2 minutes left in the 1st, Lebron goes out and its 27-12, Lebron +15 in just 10 minutes.
Kyrie-JR-Shump-Derrick Williams-Frye. Pistons go on 10-2 run in just 1:54 to close quarter.
Lebron plays the first 6 minutes of the 2nd quarter without Kyrie and is -1 during that time.
Kyrie-D. Will-Jefferson-TT-Frye. Pistons outplay the Cavs 11-8 over the next 3 minutes.
Lebron plays the next 15 minutes and is +4 during that time. Cavs still lead by 7.
Kyrie-D.Wil-JR-Derrick-TT. Pistons go on 12-0 run in just 3:30 to take a 5-point lead.
Lebron comes back in, last 8 minutes is even.
Lebron is +18 in 39 minutes, Kyrie is -23 in 9 minutes without Lebron.
And you know this shyt been going on all year because we argued about it back at the beginning of the year too.
