The term "African American" needs to be abolished. It puts black people in an "alien" category. Why can't black people just be AMERICAN? I don't see whites saying they are "European American."

I see tons of white people walking around with shirts "Kiss Me, I'm Irish". "Proud to be Italian". "Italian" Mob. "German-American", Mexican or Mexican American...all that stuff. Nobody uses "European-American" because whites weren't enslaved, and they still have a more precise understanding of where their ancestors came from. They can narrow their ethnicity down a bit more than an entire continent.

I don't often use "African American" in colloquial instances...but it is the name of our ethnic group, and any problem that arises by using the term would just as easily arise if we used another term. A lot of the time, people just use this argument to be petty. "Charlize Theron is more of an African American than you because she is actually from Africa"...no. She is South African, and probably of Dutch or English heritage. You might technically call her "African American" but you would only be purposefully muddying things up out of cynicism towards Black/African Americans.

I don't see any other term that can better label the descendents of African slaves in this country. I use the term black folks interchangeably a lot, but a lot of the time, I'm speaking of Afro-Americans, Jamaicans, Nigerians, etc...when I say African American I'm talking about an organic African American, who shares my specific heritage.

I've seen you're argument before, I do understand it, but I actually think it's more disrespectful to NOT acknowledge that a certain group of black people in this country share a common history and heritage. If "African American" as a term is bad because it "distances us from America" or something than that is just nomenclature...the idea is sound however.

We can't "just be American" because American is a nationality, not an ethnicity. Not even the Native Americans can claim to be "just American" because they were composed of separate nations themselves.

In the future, it's possible that a more unified, American Ethnicity may emerge....but I feel that we are a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG ways away from that, and even longer before black people are included in this ethnicity.

I haven't read each and every post in here but seriously guys? I'm actually part of a natural hair forum and ALL the black ladies in there couldn't believe this topic was trending. You guys need to stop saying most of us are ''baldheaded'' and we all wear wigs. Maybe the girls in YOUR area are baldheaded. Black women have BEAUTIFUL hair, it's just unfortunate that most of them don't know how to take care of it properly.

Gabby is a beautiful little girl.. & from what I know she lived with a white family for 2yrs, so obvs she doesn't know what to do with her hair. It's partly natural, relaxed, and then she stuck on a fake pony. In our community, hair is a big issue & sets off a lot of insecurities inside some people. Oh, and YOU guys don't help by telling most females you like that sleek hair & long hair look. So most females are out here running around gluing 4 bundles of Yaki to their head.. trying to please you!!! I'm part of the natural hair movement but I don't discriminate against my sisters who have not yet found how to take care of their natural hair. I'm sure with the right guidance & encouragement they will.
