I noticed nobody was complaining about the media when a couple of racist people were tweeting about the girl from the Hunger Games being black, and the media went in on those idiots. Why didn't anyone complain about the media making a big deal out of a few tweets then? Nah, y'all were too busy using those tweets as proof that ALL whites hate black people

Yeah, those few Hunger Games tweets represented all white people and should've been acknowledged....yet these Gabby hair tweets only represent a few ignorant blacks who shouldn't be acknowledged, right?

I actually haven't read this entire thread yet, I had a big ass post written up. Maybe I'll skim through and use parts of it later. But I ended up searching this woman up, the writer of the article that is, and it seems that she is half-black, with "natural" hair or at least some understanding of black hair issues.

I'll give her the benefit of the doubt, if only because it's hard to really dig deep into someones intent without knowing much more about her past writing and general tone towards our community. She could be a self-hating mulatto who wrote this article in contempt of blacks. Or she could be someone who has "peasy" hair herself who saw those tweets and emphasized with Gabby and just wanted to vent a bit....

Edit : Here is her twitter. She's talking about the article a bit. It seems like just a few days ago (Aug 1st, before Gabby won), she wrote an article on Oprah and her natural hair. For whatever reason, she seems pretty focused on this hair stuff right now.

Let me just add this : While I am usually pretty torn on this issue, to maybe play devils advocate a bit on this subject....Black people straightening their hair doesn't make them "look white". She isn't going to "look white" by rocking a more flexible pony tale. Asians don't "look white" when they get those eye surgeries either. While I of course understand the debate within our community over natural hair, I think that we have maybe over-thought this issue a bit....the issue is often seen in light of "self respect" and "pride" and all of those things which ARE important....but there is also the side of aesthetics, manageability, and just personal or even group preference. It's our hair, we can do whatever the fukk we please with it.

For the most part, I think the argument is played out, and is now just as likely to be discussed by contemptuous whites as it is concerned blacks. A futurist perspective is that once we get them designer babies, this whole "our feature"/"your feature" shyt dies.

They was receiving up to twenty tweets a day in all of March breh. No made up number.

I remember watching the Live Gymnastics chat-stream on Tuesday, and when Gabby Douglas proceeded whites started using the usual racist terms, along with derogatory joke comments like "I didn't know Africa was into Gymnastics".

I'm sure I could search many forums and dig up comments of whites making backhanded comments about Gabby Douglas/Destinee Hooker, along with their hidden anger/denial about Gabby making the All-Around and how she was less deserving than Jordyn Weiber.

A few ghetto black people who degrade the conversation to hair is not the issue, we are forgetting who the real enemy is here. The amount of whites discussing her hair/looks in a negative manner far outnumbers the amount of blacks, I'm sure. As far as the media goes whites/Fake liberals always want to put the spotlight on black issues as if they want to solve the problem, when THEY are the problem.

Meanwhile NBC is showing clips of monkeys doing gymnastics inbetween showing her routine, but the lot of are more worried about her hair, whether defending it or making fun of it. The only discussion that there should be is about her being the best black female gymnast at only 16. Not even that, the best gymnast in the world, race aside. Can we instead get mad at Bob Costas for saying, "Little white girls, get your own Olympian to admire. Gabby Douglas is JUST for the little black girls"?

Also, I don't know why how you can even equate the issues in the first place. When the Hunger Games came out, we had white people claiming that they didn't feel anything when a black girl died because she was black (And similar comments, but all coming from the same lack of empathy for a black human being). This Gabby situation is black people criticizing another black person...over her fukking hairstyle. Yeah, it's c00nish, and disappointing, but give me a fukking break.

For the most part, I don't agree with journalist writing articles based on twitter drama, but don't try and falsely equalize The Coli's reaction to each "uproar". That Hunger Games shyt was much deeper than this.
