Yes by income. I'm over $125k in a supposedly "low cost" state GA. Having said that I don't think being middle class or even upper middle class is all it's cracked up to be. Sure it's obviously better than being lower class. Having said that middle class and upper middle class are still pretty much in the same bind as lower class folks. They still have to work everyday to maintain their life style. It's not like I could stop earning an income today and be ok. It just mean I can live in a nice area and drive a nice car, blah, blah. And they probably have enough in savings/investments/etc to last them a year or two unlike the lower class. At least some middle class folks do others don't.

In my opinion you need to be rich(not super rich). But if you make 2 or 3 million a year then that is game changing because you could probably live comfortably off the interest for the rest of your life. Then you could easily invest 100k in say a rental property without the overwhelming stress of it not working out. This is where I'm trying to get to. Only then will I feel like I "made it".
Contradict yourself in the very next few sentences brehs.

In places like NYC, SF, LA, and D.C. 200k doesn't "feel" the same because usually, you are working under people who are making at least 2x that. The "executive" class in those cities is making substantially more than 200k. 200k in smaller cities is getting you access to executive-class amenities, neighborhoods, social networks, and most importantly private schools, whereas that is generally not the case in the aforementioned 4 metros for the "associate" class.

Upper for my area :yeshrug:

Upper tier

But feel middle class because I sit in traffic just like everyone else. I don't control production

Middle Class but I’m in NYC and clear well over 250k :manny:

Middle class. Although apparently I'm only like 5k away from being considered upper for my area. :yeshrug:

It all depends on whether your income would rise or lower due to the area that you are working in and job. If i took what i make in Chicago back home i would be middle class, but i would definitely get a COLA if i moved back so i would still be on the upper end.

i actually got offered something with my company but it required relocation to Ohio last year and it was a promotion... and it was more money in Ohio where i'm pretty sure it would be cheaper to live, although i didn't even do the full research. but i wasn't ready to leave my friends and family behind. kinda glad i didn't especially since the pandemic hit like 6 months later and i'm almost certain that position no longer exists, whereas mine still does.

I’m middle, about 5K from upper in my area.

Once I’m done with this MBA I should be able to cross that easily if there’s an existing economy by then. :francis:

My rent is significantly lower than most so I probably am able to keep more than many people making much more than me.

After this pandemic is over I’ll make my way up to Sacramento. That’s where the money in my field is. :yeshrug:

I always like these, the NY Times did one I posted on here a year or so back. Upper in San Diego, also single, no kids, so the money goes way further. The closer socially and economically you get to the gilded tiers, you realize what's real money and what isn't, which is a frustrating place to exist in.
