Are Westcoast black people ripping off Mexican culture?

I am not even sure if that is entirely their culture. That just seems like some shytty European stuff that they adopted, like that polka music they play with those terrible ass sounding accordions that the Germans and other Europeans brought to that region. So a lot of that shyt came to them from the Europeans, which I guess makes sense because most Mexicans are probably mixed raced rather than true native people.

Their true cultural impact is probably something akin to what the native people in the USA were doing, which is actually pretty cool.
You would be correct. That is euro culture, with regional variations as Mexico is a big ass country. It’s in south Mexico that you really have a true sense of native influence. I mean, the zapatistas in oaxaca are essentially native farmers that have their own autonomous region.

That is not to say that ancient traditions didn’t survive. Even the Catholicism down there is a syncretic mix of ancient traditions and the new euro sensibilities. That’s why occultic figures like Santa muertewthrive, as they embody the underground ethos of Mexican culture. Mexico has seen a lot of bloodshed which has to be abated…I’ve always found this personification of death to be interesting, as you also have la catrina, and day of the dead celebrations that many people, at the very least, openly acknowledge.

A large reason why our native culture is lost is due to European wanton destruction of priceless artifacts, codices, art, etc. Some codices and artwork survived that was recorded by individuals such as Bernardo de sahugin.

Y’all can have Florida cowboy culture :scust:

Nah, but for real, I think @IllmaticDelta had it right in that the two cultures merged at some point. The southwest and Florida aren’t that far apart and I’m sure commerce was booming as the US started expanding. It is not insane to believe that certain cultural traits would be borrowed via a vis trade and travel.

Pretty white of you to completely revise history. Texas and many other parts of the the country were Mexican territories at some point. It’s not out of the ordinary for Mexican nationals and American-born Mexicans to have established roots. The Chisholm trail is in the north and stretched into Kansas, of course there weren’t Mexicans there…there wasn’t much of anything.

Undeveloped land was the reason mexico invited settlers in the first place. The Mexican government had enough trouble domestically, what with the relatively recent independence from Spain, Mexican history was initially very tumultuous. So you basically have these white settlers with slaves that moved into these backwater areas to drive economic development. We all know how the rest worked out…but that’s another subject!

At the end of the day we’re all Americans - I say that with a tremendous amount of shame - and we all share a tremendous amount of culture. It’s not a zero sum game.

First off. Mexicans are white. Always have been.

Statement from a Mexican leader right here in Houston.

I can't be white. I'm black. Black can't be white.

Breh.........Mexico ruled TX(which Coahuila y Tejas wasn't really what we think of Texas today) for less than a whopping 15 years before they lost it.

And Mexicans themselves were already being outnumber by Anglo migrants and their slaves LONG before that. Even more fled or were banned from many cities after they lost the war to the Anglos and their Tejano allies.

The territory today known as texas never had a thriving population anywhere outside of the extreme west and southern parts of the state prior to anglo migration(East TX was a sparcely populated wilderness of wild "uncivilized" indians, runaway slaves and french, hispanic, and anglo white outlaws).

Hispanics historically have never had a significant population in this state outside of the extreme western and southern parts until VERY recently due to mass migration.

The "cattle rush" of the post civil war mid 19th century was by and large driven by ppl from the "old south".

(That is a pic of a florida cracker cowboy. And peep the fit- Much more typical of actual TX cowboys in the 19th century than "rodeo stereotype" suggest)

Anglo Americans already came into contact with vaquero traditions when they took over other spanish territories long before coming to Mexican Tejas.

And as you can expect most Mexican cowboys in Texas were located in the extreme south and western parts of the state.

You just did a roundabout way of agreeing with me :pachaha:

Mexicans weren’t in the northernmost parts of the state, as there wasn’t anything there. Economic development was initiated primarily by white settlers, armed with slaves under the auspices of the Mexican government.

As for Lulac. They were never a revolutionary organization, they sought the conciliatory route of assimilation. I don’t agree with that, and LULAC itself has moved away from such stances and function more as a Latino fundraising arm for democrat party.

The abuses natives, freed and captured slaves, and the Mexican populations in Texas endured is unspeakable. Texas is testament to the prevailing legacy of the antebellum south. Texas as an institution is the heart of the confederacy.

It's the truth :manny:
A lot of west coast rappers took the khaki shorts, long white socks look too which also came from cholo/chicano culture.

They could've at least gave some props to Kid Frost or something.

Khaki cam in after one of the wars, not Mexicans. Plaid been worn since Scottish immigrants not Mexicans .

White lumberjacks wore it as uniform. Black Americans bought the cheap stuff and made it into a look that everyone copied. Research next time before spreading false information

I remember seeing black and white photos that were updated to color of blacks in California wearing flannels in the 50’s and 60’s.
