Are we seeing too many open world games?

It's not the genre. It's the people.

All the world-building tech wizardry in existence won't help you if you cannot fill the space(s) you create with a good/engaging/uplifting/challenging story.
Rage 2 is a good example of this right here

A lot of these “open world” games are just a lot of filler between “missions”. The story is still incredibly linear so you’re really progressing in one way, the map needs to be unlocked at a certain time, annoying “cues” tell you that you need to do a certain mission, etc.

I’m really tired of “collectibles” for the sake of collectibles. :snoop:

a really well done “open world” concept was the class system in Bully. You had the choice to be in class or not and it effected the character. It was a “real life” type of experience.

I’d love an open world game that’s like: you’re a cop trying to hunt down killers at different stages of the game. Finding clues at certain junctures in whatever order you find them while managing random crime that happens daily/nightly. A true open world fee where there’s no direct linear path, but still a story you’re following

The "open world" games hardly feel like "open world" in 99% of cases.

Its just a linear game that has a "free play" mode in between missions. What you do during "free play" is just for your own enjoyment and has no long term impact. Buildings you destroy will be rebuilt, police will respawn, etc.

Best explanation of it. I think think this is why BOTW feels so special because it happened to make the open world a living, breathing part of the game. Other open worlds are just as you said, just filler between linear ass missions.
