Are there any Black directors with a similar style to Nolan or Scorsese?

Tone means something different to you than it does to me

Just the general vibe of the movie, in this case being serious

Well that’s a different question. Not to put words in your mouth, but the same tone Nolan uses and a serious tone aren’t the same thing so that’s why I got tripped up.

There are black directors who use a serious tone but it’s not the same tone as Nolan because his subject matter is wildly different. Most, not all, but most black directors dabble in real life stories or historical fiction. Rarely do they do something like inception or the prestige which has a serious tone but is heightened reality. Do the right thing is a serious movie but it’s not the same tone as the dark knight, which is also a serious movie.

Subject matter plays big in tonality and they don’t play in the same sandbox as Nolan.

I just said that lol. But even then the prestige isn’t the same serious as Selma. The dark knight isn’t as serious as do the right thing

I know what you're saying. They're apples and oranges.

Nolan deals in 'what if's which can be serious and hold a mirror up to society and humanity metaphorically. If you do something literal like a historical event or a hot day full of racial tensions it automatically comes off as serious and earnest, whereas most viewers don't make the connection that the best Sci-Fi is asking us the deepest questions about our interior lives.

The Prestige is not a serious film, although its a lot of fun. Inception is serious though.

Man everyone ain’t gotta agree
And part of it is I can’t really communicate what I’m trying to say
But I the best way to describe it is tone

It’s been a while but I’d put set it off in that category too
But I hated straight out of Compton

For some reason, I've been thinking about this thread. The Wire reminds me somewhat of Scorsese in tone. Its definitely epic gangster shyt but I guess it doesn't have the flashy visuals of one of his films. But the attention to detail, characterizations and stuff are on his level.
