Are there any Black directors with a similar style to Nolan or Scorsese?

Mario Van Peebles is almost always who I think of whenever this topic comes up. He has a very gritty, realistic, almost film-noir type style that's on par with Nolan &co, but he's never been given a big budget Hollywood project that gives him a chance to "prove himself" on the big screen, so he gets ignored.

So basically your answer is no?
Tarantino doesn’t make Blackish movies

I think it’s definitely possible to make those type of movies with a Black cast

I ain’t know there was a black McQueen
I always think of the fashion designer
BUT HE'S COOL WITH THE WU-TANG!!!!!

:mindblown:

That's a hard question...:patrice: And you know what's crazy is that scorsesee is overrated... TBH in my book...:manny: He's good but I take Nolan over Scorsesee anyday...

And F Gary Gray comes close, very underrated TBH...:ehh:
I have to agree with you on Scorcese outside of Goodfellas and his movies with Leonardo DiCaprio, it’s a chore sitting through them.

Unfortunately
I can’t think of him without thinking of that shytty movie he had on Netflix starring him, his kids, Snoop Dogg, and YG at a gifted school

I need to watch it again just for the fukkery and bad acting

Style and stories are not the same. Those directors have a unique style. Think of a Nolan’s last two films and his earlier ones. Some folks may not even noticed that he changed cinematographers because Wally Pfister went into directing himself. He has a style on how he likes his films to look.

Everybody can’t convey his way of film. That’s what makes a director. It isn’t what they do, it’s how they do it.

If you mean stories, then it depends because all directors aren’t auteurs.

That’s what I explained. It’s their how. No one can make a film like them.

An auteur wants their own flavor.
Yup. And not every director is an auteur. Nothing wrong with being a journey director. You get hired to do the job and you do exactly what the studio wants. Robert wise was a journeyman director and he made the sound of music, the haunting, and the first Star Trek movie. Spike Lee, Jordan peele, Ava Duvernay, and Ryan coogler are who I think of when I think black auteurs. At least of the crop doing it currently.
