Are there any Black directors with a similar style to Nolan or Scorsese?

I don't think theres many directors similar black or otherwise. Tarantino was influenced a lot by Scorsese and his movies are black-ish, that might be as close as it gets.

Very few directors are as good as Scorsese. Nolan makes very epic, psychological type movies. I think if a black director was making similar movies they wouldn't be recognizably 'black' movies thematically so it would be kind of irrelevant what color the director was, whereas somebody could easily transplant a Scorsese film to the hood and throw in some social/racial commentary.

I recommend checking out Steve McQueen's movies. The ones I've seen are fantastic, especially Shame.

So basically your answer is no?
Tarantino doesn’t make Blackish movies

I think it’s definitely possible to make those type of movies with a Black cast

I ain’t know there was a black McQueen
I always think of the fashion designer

Thats why I said as close as you're gonna get.

Those guys are auteur directors who have proven themselves capable of taking a big budget, making acclaimed movies and making a profit. There are very few of them. You need to find a black director who actually has a vision to make those types of movies.

Having a black cast is a different question altogether than having a black director. I'll reiterate my point about the color being irrelevant if you want to make epic sci-fi movies. They're about humanity, not about racial commentary. They're often about transcending that kind of earthly small thinking. If a black director was making Inception or Interstellar for example, there would have to be a good reason for casting everybody as black, rather than just to do it.

I think there's the possibility of Jordan Peele turning into an epic type director like Nolan in the future, but he's not there yet, and he probably won't be if he sticks to Horror.

We’re getting too far away from my original point or maybe I wasn’t clear

I’m mostly just a fan of these guys tone with their movies and how it seems like everything has a lot of depth to it...not trying to make a 1 to 1 comparison

And bruh you sound crazy...they do all white sci-fi movies all the time why not all Black?

Spike is a student of Scorsese.

McQueen probably comes closest to Nolan in tone except McQueen understands subtlety and the concept of show-not-tell.

What I’m referring to is the serious tone...I feel like like of Black movies aren’t too sentimental
Hollywood only green lights black films like Tyler Perry because he has a base. They not about to give some random director 100 million dollars to do an all black sci fi movie unless it's backed by MARVEL

Looking back at Malcolm X which I loved when I first saw it
It had some corny moments

If we’re talking about similar styles no.

If we’re talking “as good” then Spike Lee and Steve Mcqueen are the obvious answers. Spike Lee is just as talented as any of these celebrated white directors and better than many of them.

Jordan Peele needs ONE more great movie under his belt and he can be in the conversation certainly.

Ryan Coogler could be up there too in a couple years
