The Clipse were definitely unknowns, but this is what I mean: Clipse first album was shelved, Lord Willin was a success, HHNF was critically acclaimed, but wasn't anywhere as successful as LW, and Til The Casket Drops was neither critically or commercially successful as the previous two.

Kelis is a similar story.

Given how big The Neptunes were, none of the lesser knowns or unknowns became huge. Whereas you take Missy, who pretty much became iconic and every album with Timbaland was a critical and commercial success. Ginuwine was huge Even Magoo went platinum with Timbaland's production.
I see what you mean. And again at this point I’m just kind of playing devils advocate for the hell of it, but don’t you think that Clipse was almost destined to not become huge? They did hustler/dealer raps and I think it’s just too difficult to become Missy type iconic/successful if coke rap is your lane. I’m just not sure it was in the cards for Clipse to ever be any bigger than they were.

The amount of hits they produced around 02-03 was :picard:

I mean they had a lot of hits before and after, but i particularly remember around that perioid they were just crushing it. Every week a new single was poppin - hip hop, r&b, pop, whatever...

Crazy prolific.

But Lord Willin was the album that really convinced me that they were legit...before that most of their shyt was like different versions of Super Thug. But I was sleeping on their album work with Kelis before that too.

They're GOATS, but wouldn't make my top 5

I mean, Jeezy was successful at doing hustler/dealer raps. T.I. was superstar status doing that type of music. This was near or in the same era as The Clipse.

Best producers all time, meaning not just hip hop? They’re up there but Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis own that to me. Dudes were inventive and not just riding trends. Neptunes are up there though

Neptunes ain't never rode no trends either and have been very creative and original with their sound as well.

Agree. There has been some great producers but there have been few to reinvent the sound of radio and create their own style. Like Max Martin is a monster and Dre is a monster, but in reality they weren’t doing anything massively different sonically. Jimmy Jam & Terry, The Neptunes and Timbaland did

In terms of sheer output, they are up there. Top 25 for sure

But I judge my favorite producers by their peaks and masterpieces, and some of them have higher peaks than the Neptunes. George Clinton, Quincy Jones, Brian Eno, DJ Premier, The RZA, Timbaland, Prince Paul, J Dilla, Dr. Dre, Organized Noize off the top of my head

the thing that i love about The Neptunes is their sound is timeless, even today, their sound is so futuristic :wow:
The T.I. song i sent you there is a unreleased Neptunes produced song from 2009. The youtube video where they perform it live is somewhere out there. But that made it in to the hands of T.I. in 2019 when he showcased it on IG Live.

I have other Pharrell produced tracks too and honestly Pharrell was ahead of time with certain ones when he made them around 2008-2010.
