I see what you mean. And again at this point I’m just kind of playing devils advocate for the hell of it, but don’t you think that Clipse was almost destined to not become huge? They did hustler/dealer raps and I think it’s just too difficult to become Missy type iconic/successful if coke rap is your lane. I’m just not sure it was in the cards for Clipse to ever be any bigger than they were.The Clipse were definitely unknowns, but this is what I mean: Clipse first album was shelved, Lord Willin was a success, HHNF was critically acclaimed, but wasn't anywhere as successful as LW, and Til The Casket Drops was neither critically or commercially successful as the previous two.
Kelis is a similar story.
Given how big The Neptunes were, none of the lesser knowns or unknowns became huge. Whereas you take Missy, who pretty much became iconic and every album with Timbaland was a critical and commercial success. Ginuwine was huge Even Magoo went platinum with Timbaland's production.
