The biggest knock against The Neptunes is that they were great with established artists, but the work with lesser knowns or unknowns didn't yield similar results. That and the fact they had massive hits, but the albums they produced or helmed outside of Justified weren't big at all compared to massive hits they had. You compare that with Timbaland who had Missy, Magoo (got this dude a platinum plaque), and Ginuwine. Then there's artists like Bubba, Petey, and Tweet who were going gold with a Timbaland production.

That's not even looking at what Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Prince, Quincy Jones, Dr. Dre, etc.

Word, I hear you what you saying. Yeah.

I think it's hard to say because by the time they started working with non established artists, the work was somewhat divided up, or so it seemed?

Somewhere around the mid going into the late 2000's, they divided the work up and started working on producing on projects independently of each other.

Pharrell always seemed content on working on more mainstream music whereas Chad seemed more content on working with more non established artist and on music that wasn't necessarily mainstream or strictly a mainstream single.

But I hear what you saying tho.

To me yes.

Some of the melodies and grooves they have are just insane, and dont get me started on their Bridges!! People just dont make a dope bridge like the Neptunes. I mean JT's last album was not good like his others but the bridge on 'Breeze off the pond' :wow:

I don’t know if by results you mean sales but I’d count Clipse as pretty much unknowns. I don’t know how commercially successful Lord Willing was but I remember it was big. And in no small part due to Grindin’ and the Neptunes producing every track, doing hooks, and being in all the videos, etc.

I know Clipse finally moved away from all Neptunes production on their 3rd album but if they started off without the Neptunes I’m not sure they would’ve been nearly as big. They also gave the Neptunes a chance to be creative, and admitted they were open to using a lot more of their experimental music (Grindin’, Comedy Central, etc.)

I know it’s not important but I wish I knew who did what in the early years of their production

Discogs.com does a good job of breaking down who does what when it comes to the work involved with making music.

And usually they list all of the producers, musicians, artists etc work from the beginning to the present.

Many of their productions didnt age well..

yea, a ton. for every Superthug/Virginia there's 10 i could post that sound like trash. Timbo was way doper

i actually dig solo Pharrell productions the past decade than the last few years of Neptunes, i think Chad was dragging the ship down cuz hes done nothing of note

The Clipse were definitely unknowns, but this is what I mean: Clipse first album was shelved, Lord Willin was a success, HHNF was critically acclaimed, but wasn't anywhere as successful as LW, and Til The Casket Drops was neither critically or commercially successful as the previous two.

Kelis is a similar story.

Given how big The Neptunes were, none of the lesser knowns or unknowns became huge. Whereas you take Missy, who pretty much became iconic and every album with Timbaland was a critical and commercial success. Ginuwine was huge Even Magoo went platinum with Timbaland's production.
