Btw you have more room to maneuver with this as there's multiple leagues in European Soccer. When Messi jumped to PSG he went from La Liga to a farmers league, unless they matched up in the CL it's not much of a deal to have a rooting interest for PSG

I have to admit, i was a lifelong United fan, but once Mikael Silvestre went to Arsenal, i was a big gooner for a time.

Personally, it seems more logical to enjoy watching Kobe because you like the way he plays than enjoy watching whatever random roster is on the court just because that's who the Buss family put together this year.

I understand that for most people sports is emotional, not logical, and so they're emotionally invested in whatever team they picked when they were children. And I'm not going to criticize them for that. But for the emotional fans to constantly act so insecure about the logical fans that they have to bring it up thousands of times on this board....what are you getting out of that? Why keep making threads about it or bringing it up in every thread?

Just accept that some people have logical reasons for what they like rather than purely emotional reasons. Everyone is different. What would be so hard about falling back and appreciating that?

Sports fans overall are becoming less-tied to their hometown teams than ever before.

In part because:

1. You have the ability to see more teams and players. In the old days before cable tv and sports tv networks (think the Yankees and YES Network) you only saw your local team. You got the chance to watch national games once or twice a week. Now you can watch any team at any time through cable, streaming or even browsing highlights online. That broader exposure lets you expand your fandom.

2. Certainly fantasy sports and DFS (Fanduel. DraftKings, etc) have allowed fans to have a greater interest in players they normally wouldn't follow in years past. You might want the Lakers to win, but if your GPP builds routinely have Kevin Durant in them, you're going to check out more Suns games than you might otherwise have. And you may come to respect and root for and appreciate that player even though he doesn't play for your home team.

3. Free Agency played some part in it. This isn't the old days where athletes were largely restricted to the teams that drafted and developed them. While this board has this romantic view that players of yesterday stayed with 1 team out of loyalty and a fierce competitive spirit to win it for the home team, the reality is they simply didn't really have the options or power to control their own destiny. Sure, some of the highest profile superstars could put more pressure in this area. But most everyone else couldn't. The fact that players today have more power to choose where they want to play, and have the ability to get fair market value means they're going to move around. What that means is that when they do move around, other fans will be exposed to that player's skill and greatness. And any old fans of that player may still remain fans....or may even become bigger fans of them should that player succeed in a better team environment.


There is nothing wrong with stanning 1 team. But there's also nothing wrong with stanning a player who might not play for your team. Because if you love the game, what's the difference? Why would it be wrong to root for Jimmy Butler or Giannis Antetokounmpo if you're a Nuggets fan, but still root for the Nuggets to win if they played each other?

I don't understand why some people act like both can't exist.

At most 1/4 of the Laker fans here are even from LA, if that. And y'all have no love for the Clippers.

That's even more true in soccer. 99% of Manchester United fans don't have anything to do with London. Most Barcelona stans have never been to Spain - hell, they probably can't even speak Spanish.

You know how your a Portland fan but you stan LeBron. That's how it is. You don't stan the player over your club especially if they currently don't play for or have never had any association with your club. You can still stan the player but club/team comes first

And there's nothing wrong with that. But people in this thread talking like it doesn't happen in soccer.

If you already have your club team and then your national team player is playing in a different country then you follow them. But you don't follow their club team you follow yours.

Which in soccer gives a shytload of exceptions because there's 5 major leagues not even counting places like Brazil and Mexico.

So take the 90's when Nigerian international Nwankwo Kanu joined Arsenal. Alot of Nigerian fans started supporting Arsenal once when Kanu left 5 years later the fans stayed as Arsenal fans but still followed Kanu because he is their national team player. That is completely different from supporting United to Real to Juve to United to the Saudi team.

Some people follow the player to his first team, some follow him to every team. Exactly the same as any sport.


I'm just pointing out people are the same across the world, across different sports. It's a ridiculous claim to pretend that a billion basketball fans are qualitatively different from a couple billion soccer fans, when both encompass every type of person on Earth. That only happens on here for narratives, in reality sports fans have far more in common than differences.

The Premier League is like college football, they are actually cross town rivals, they have rivalries that date back hundreds of years. Their daddy was a Liverpool fan, their grandfather was a Liverpool fan. shyt like that. A lot of the people don't move around as much, if their family was from one end of England then they probably still have family there a hundred years later.

The U.S. is mostly comprised of immigrants. Families aren't as deeply rooted in one area. Some are. But really, it's just the NBA that's like this. NFL fans still cheer the team. baseball fans still cheer the team.

It depends. I sometimes work at Tottenham Hotspur (yuck). A lot Koreans visit there and support the team because of the player Son. He sells a lot of shirts. If he left, I believe they will too.

Overall though footy fans support the club and not the player.

@ Bron Stan’s in here tryna cape. Soccer fans don’t engage on that world wide following a man around shyt. They have favorite players and they also have teams they’re loyal too. Watch a soccer game and see the fans crying over some random loss. They go harder than any other sports fans for their team.
