More so that the whole area is very mixed. You have Tunisians, Algerians and Moroccans that look exactly like Southern Italians, lest we forget Northern Africa was part of the Roman Empire way back then. An Egyptian friend told me when she was growing up in Cairo you had tons of Italians, Greeks in the area and that she grew up eating pasta al forno. All those areas were either under Roman rule, later on the Arab empires, later on the Ottoman Empire...but Italy and Spain also has invasions from Northern Europeans (Wisigoths and them) tribes that for example went all the way down to Sicily and were the first to build on the site of the Mezquita in Cordoba.
That's why it's ridiculous to talk about "real" identity or whatever, especially in that part of the world.
