But we didn't even know that was the last battle at the time. Plus it was kinda glitchy or vague. I was going around killing Banshees and Husks for over an hour because the control (or whatever it was) would not spawn. I had to reset the game and do it over. It was more annoying than rewarding. Personally I think a battle involving Harbinger in some way would have felt a lot better.
The boss battle is usually the main signal that the game is ending. Without it the ending can feel anticlimactic. It's like watching a basketball or football game where the game clock is known only to the ref for the last 5 minutes.

In a sense I think they are almost extinct, yes.
Alot of these new FBs require know how and less actual skill. They want it to be gratifyingly hard instead of frustratingly hard
Back in the 2D gaming days you needed know how, perfect timing/execution, and sometimes a little bit of luck
and when you died you went ALL THE WAY back to the beginning, knowing that while fighting the boss really puts the pressure on as a youngin
