No, they Basically just got a very clever marketing campaign.
If they were still called minivan's like they are , people wouldn't be buying them either, but men like the sound of suv and think the new categorization makes them less of a soccer mom vehicle. and their wifes of course are perfectly happy having a minivan as a family vehicle.
Pretty genius on the part of the automobile industry actually.

SUVs are popular because people think they're safer wrapped in something bigger. The logic doesn't really follow with modern safety standards, so now you're just adding more mass into a collision, therefore more kinetic energy, which is probably going to get more people hurt. Those safety standards, however, are making every vehicle larger anyway. Most people that THINK they need a truck or SUV could get along with a sedan just fine. MFs ain't hauling nothing on the regular or doing no towing.

I think cars are absolutely much bigger and wider than they used to be.
Pickup trucks are obscenely large. Something needs to be done about them because they're a menace. And most people aren't using them as work vehicles so if it were up to me I'd ban most of them.
You can cherry pick older cars and say they were always big -- like a 1970s Cadillac or an Buick Elektra.
But in general I'd say they were smaller and more narrow. Almost certainly closer to the ground.
The 1970s fuel crisis did lead to some smaller cars, more efficient cars in the 1980s but I feel like in the last 20 years things have gotten out of hand.
You look at a 1998 Toyota Tacoma to a 2022 Ford F-150 and it's like a truck got supersized.
Even now, look at any parking lot and probably half of the cars are SUVs.

PROFIT MARGIN IS MUCH THINNER FOR CARS. SUV'S ARE MUCH EASIER TO DESIGN ALSO.
Remember they had that Buick commercial with Shaq to advertise as the sedan for fat and tall people?
Shaq was basically sitting in the back seat of that fugging car.
I think that explains why taller people opt for large trucks and large suvs.

If you are "6'2" and driving a Honda Civic then you are not going to be able to have a taller person sitting behind you. That is the problem with sedans if you have teen age kids that you have to haul around with all of their shyt like sports equipment. That is why people opt for bigger vehicles like trucks and suvs. If you are by yourself or it is just you and your wife then a sedan makes sense if both of y'all are normal height.
