It's not much info I actually took a history of theatre course in school so I read about it's history of clowning but it is still unclear. There is a passage in my history of theatre book that talks about how
Commedia dell'arte performers would paint themselves black or wear mask. Major characters would were cunning peasants and servants. These performers predate our modern clowns.
