Well, I just decided to learn Portuguese. Downloading the Duolingo app now!

It will probably take me twice as long to learn it because the vocal tones are hard to mimic. If I get that part down, then the grammar should come easy.

Got my degree in Chinese. Spoke at an advanced level many moons ago, but never did anything when I got back to the US to get fluent. I get depressed cuz I see some of my classmates killing it out there.

One guy started a company that is flourishing to the point where he gave an incredible fluent speech in all Chinese to an audience for Forbes.

:mjcry:

Another guy has a very popular show on Youku where he does instructional videos in all Chinese. I dun goofed.

Bro so you learn new languages in your basement? You already speak Spanish, get on Tandem and find some Brazilians and do video chats asking if you can imitate them

This should take you 3 months to get good

I don't :mjcry:

I keep wanting to learn a language and have free access to many avenues (rosetta stone, rocket language, transparent language online from the military) but I really can't decide on what to learn.

Here's the trick I used to learn how to roll R's....

Take English words that have a double letters in them (like battery, the word I used). Normally, these words have 3 syllables, but what you're going do is say the word with 2 syllables: instead of bat-te-ry, say bat-tery and say it fast. The double "t" will eventually roll like an "rr." The muscle memory(or tongue memory, in this case) in this exercise will teach you placement and movement in rolling.

It will sound silly at first, but you'll be rolling in a day, two tops.

First question to ask yourself.... Why do you want to learn a language?

Second.... How much do you want to use it?

Third... How much time are you willing to put in to learn?

Fourth... Is this just a hobby or do you want this skill to have real utility?

Depending on your utility for the language, your interests and the difficulty you're willing to endure will determine which language is best for you.

I wanted to learn Spanish because I love soccer, so being able to understand the commentators during a match was enough incentive for me. However, Spanish wasn't the first language I wanted to learn.... French. At 9 years old, it was too difficult to learn it on my own plus I had no access to it outside of audio/video tapes & books. French isn't widely spoken in the US, but it's the official second language of Canada. At that time, I had no way to utilize what I was learning, so I gave it up.

Spanish was easier and more accessible here.

If you want to get paid with your language skills, Arabic or any Asian language will make you money, but those languages are the most difficult to learn. Not saying it's impossible, but it's best to start learning these languages young.

Germanic languages are a little easier(not much though) because English, at its core, is a Germanic language. German and Dutch, to name a few, fall in this language family.

Next, is the popular Romance language family.... Portuguese, French, Spanish, Italian and Romanian. Widely accessible.

You can even learn African language if your heart desires.

There are many language families and the possibilities are endless.

I learned Chinese too. Went to Beijing Normal for a semester as well. Where did you live?

It takes a while but if you know Spanish you will catch on. Watching novelas doesn't hurt either.

I've been everywhere, but I spent most of my time in Qingdao. I miss it.

I stopped by QIngdao, it was pretty cool. I got fluent too and left for grad school. Wonder what would have happened if I stayed but I networked hard and realized the expat wave was beginning to slow down around the time I was there (2005-6). I think it crested in 2008. It's been harder for folks since the Olympics.
