outside of the classical realm, there are tons of musicians that have no fukking idea what they're looking at if you hand them sheet music, especially guitarists. which really doesn't matter much anyways since the guitar doesn't really jive with sheet music because there's different ways to play notes and chords.

sure, it's a part of theory, i'll give you that. like i said, you don't need to know how to fill out a staff to understand scales, modes, articulations, etc.

youre so wrong and naive at the same time.
you need to know how to fill a staff if I was to dictate to you. if you cant write down rhythm patterns i tap or speak in syllables and NOT be able to notate it like a classical composer would do BECAUSE THEY WERE CLASSICALLY TRAINED, you're a joke.

1. Classical music is not the only music.
2. On a fretted instrument like the bass guitar, a clever person could figure out basic scales and patterns since every jump and gap is uniform in terms of steps.
I can read music, but I'm not going to say I'm a better musician than Paul McCartney or Django Reinhart.

No, you idiot. I'm a music teacher who teaches classical theory and piano to children. So i know for a fact you need to know theory to start a musical endeavor.

your dumbass started out saying you can't be a real musician or learn music theory without knowing how to read sheet music, which is 100% wrong. you're stuck in your own little classical trained world where apparently there's only 1 way to learn, on paper, by reading musical notation on a staff.
sure, knowing how to read a piece of brahms is a great tool to have in your skillset but if you can't, it doesn't mean you don't know how to PLAY music. it means you can't READ it in that format.
