Anyone on here play any instruments? If so, what genre? Do you play in a group? Got any clips or samples?

I played a lil bit of guitar in HS. Sucked horribly. Picked up bass during the summer between 11th and 12th grade. Was much better at that. Played with folks here and there. Never gigged seriously though. I'd be up for playing again though.

I play guitar and the trumpet. I play them both for around 4/5 years now. The irony is that I love to play the guitar, but I'm pretty average. And I don't really like to play the trumpet, but I'm pretty good at it.

I thought about giving lessons, but I'm not that adept at reading music. It's one of those things where I know how to play, I wouldn't be comfortable teaching people, much less charging them. :(

That's how I was with clarinet and guitar. I was pretty good at clarinet, but I felt like a dweeb playing it. :snoop:

I used to play a piano when I was younger.

In junior high to highschool, I made beats with my Yamaha DJX. But, all my beats are on cassette tapes :sadbron:

I can't find a recoder for cheap to transfer them to digital :snoop:

You know how to play by ear then... thats not a true musician. If you cant read music and rhythm patterns, then youre just a fan; not a true musician.

I beg to differ. I don't think that a lack musical reading prowess makes a person less of a musician. There are many prolific musicians that don't read music. There are many different methods to playing music. Not just standard notation.

youre not getting what im trying to explain. to be a TRUE musician you need to read music.
If i was to notate a rhythm pattern mixed with notes, key signature and time signature...and you cant read it, how can you say you're a true musician??

Upon re-reading your response, I have to admit that you do have a point. As far as a TRUE musician goes. I suppose I just took offense to the whole "You're just a fan; not a true musician" part. I'll fall back on that point. I'm the first person to admit that I'm no Flea or Jaco Pastorius. Doesn't make anything that I create any more or less valid than a "true" musicians offering. I suppose that it all comes down to what one considers a TRUE musician.

A musician = a performer who is skilled in music. I'm skilled in music but don't like performing it. If you learned music theory, it would open your brain and ear to new things. You should try to learn theory. It wouldn't hurt.

You don't need to know how to read to be a great storyteller. Think about that.
