@QuintessentialBM What's your budget? You should be able to get all the gear you need fort like $500. How much do you wanna spend on a bike? An SV650 is a poor man's Ducati. You can get a used one for like 4000

I'm willing to spend up to $7,000 used and up to $13,000 new. I have no problem with car payments. The issue is I don't really want a 250-300cc motorcycle because I don't want to spend a lot of money on something I'm going to grow out of in 3-6 months skill wise and there's a small(big) issue with my size. I'm 5'11 and slightly over 300lbs, so the suspension and tires won't hold up very well on a 300cc bike. I'm willing to pay the cost on a 600cc or 750cc bike that I know I'll keep for more than one year, that I can grow with and that will last until I decide to get a new bike (if ever). Getting a bike is dangerous no matter which one I get, so I'm willing to take some risk with a slightly larger bike. I'm not 18-25 years old either.... I'm well into my thirties, so I'll be a little more responsible with a bigger bike.

Gear is not expensive either breh.

Helmet- $70- Bilt Fusion Helmet - Cycle Gear
Jacket- $80- Bilt Blaze Jacket - Cycle Gear
Gloves- $30- Bilt Explorer Adventure Gloves - Cycle Gear
Pants- $110- Joe Rocket Atomic Pants - Cycle Gear
Boots- $90- Bilt Pole Position Boots - Cycle Gear

So head to toe protection for ~$400.... really no excuse

You can buy used but make sure you get a new helmet. They are no good after ~2-3 years

Thanks for this post!!!!

Any bike, even a 250, can handle a 300lb rider. They are rated for like a 175 rider and passenger.

That said, I think there is merit to getting something like a 500 or 650 twin. I would not get a 600cc or bigger four banger. I have a Kawasaki Ninja 650 and it's good. I've had it for 5 years now I think and I'm just now starting to get bored. Anything bigger than that is gonna be too much for a beginner. Even a 650 is borderline but it will be offset by your weight.

You are probably gonna need to get a recalibrated suspension for your weight too. Stock suspension is gonna feel soggy.

Ok, bruhs... I found a dope used motorcycle that I'm going to look at tomorrow. It's a 2004 Honda CBR-600RR SP Red Bull. I'm on the fence about it, but there is an issue that is out of my expertise. Unfortunately, the bike has an electrical issue. The turn signals don't work and it will most likely need a new battery. How much am I going to spend off top to get this fixed because I'm going to deduct from the 3500.00 that he is wanting for the bike?

I'm also planning to take a friend, but in the event I cannot find one, I need a checklist of what to look for. Right now, I have:

Frame
Tires
Engine (Sound)
Leaks
Chain
Brakes
Clutch
Shift lever

The bike has 9500 miles, so it will probably need a valve adjustment as well(which is probably another reason why he's selling it).

I won't lie, it's a dope bike and I kinda want, but not if I have to put in more than 1500.00 to get it ready to ride (that valve adjustment may eat that 1500 alone). I'll seriously listen any advice given.

And thanks in advance!

Don't buy it. Aside from the fact that it has too much power for a beginner, sport bikes have horrible ergonomics for a beginner. If you like Hondas, look for a CBR600F4i. Looks about the same, but is way more comfortable and manageable for a beginner. PRobably cheaper to buy and definitely cheaper to insure too.

Alright, I'm officially a biker boy now. I own that 2004 Honda CBR-600RR SP Red Bull edition motorcycle. I'll post a pic later, but now I need some help finding a license plate/mount that is similar to the one in this video except I need a mount that will hold American plates. I cannot stand side mounted plates, so my plate mount has to go!

Not sure if the link worked or not but I found a license plate bracket for that bike on amazon made by TST industries. 25$

Also I don't know how mechanically inclined you guys are but thanks to YouTube and message boards all the info is there to do the maintenance yourself. Imo bikes are easy to work on, I plan to adjust my valve clearances as well as install a new valve cover gasket. Get the basics tools you're gonna need to maintain your bike you'll save a ton of money if that don't work check Craigslist for a local mechanic with shop experience and take it to them... but seriously research.. these things are easy to work on..(get a Haynes repair manual for your bike a must have)

Ok, I'll get that Haynes manual. Yeah, I'll be working on my own bike up to the point where engine repair is involved (not bout that life).

About that bracket.... The link works fine. I'm not sure if I'll be able to use it because I have a big ass Yoshimura exhaust that eats up all the space under my tail, so I won't be able to mount my plate to the back unless I rig it to the exhaust.

ETA: the pic.... not the prettiest, but she runs. Needs a wash and wax.

That bytch loud as fukk. I don't care because I'm accustomed to loud vehicles... my first car was a 1967 old school Chevy Impala coupe with a 350(instead of the 287). At least, they'll hear me when I'm coming so they can get out of the way. Lol. There shouldn't be any way a person doesn't know I'm there.

Get some earplugs asap. You'll start to get constant ringing in your ears and your hearing will fukk up more and more over time. Exhaust + wind noise aint no joke.

These the ones I use: http://amzn.to/2mzFKoQ

You're gonna wanna clean & lube your bike chain every couple hundred miles. I do it every 2 weeks. If I drive in rain or something I do it right after.

Brush: http://amzn.to/2mzBINr

Degreaser: http://amzn.to/2neRZuW

Lube: http://amzn.to/2mUoBsX

Dont be tempted to buy the plastic brush for half price. I bought two and they both disintegrated after like 2-3 uses.

You gonna also need one of these stands to clean/lube your chain. You CAN do it without this, but this makes it 100 times easier. Hit up a local harbor freight:
1000 Lb. Capacity Motorcycle Swingarm Rear Stand

This sae to usb is CLUTCH. Charges my phone under my passenger seat: http://amzn.to/2n474yN

Some ppl say get a cheap helmet, but me I wouldn't cheap out on really the only thing that will save your life in a crash. I got this Shoei: http://amzn.to/2neLTdU

Thank for this post!

The dude that sold me the bike gave me supplies, but it isn't enough to make it through a cleaning, especially degreaser. I believe I can find those DuPont products at a local store we have in town. I kinda hate buying (and waiting) stuff like that online. I most definitely will be buying that aluminum brush. The brush given to me was plastic.

My city just got a Harbor Freight, so I'm in luck as far as that stand and other motorcycle equipment and tools.

Still need to get sized on a helmet, but I'll probably go expensive on the helmet and cheap on the other gear because I won't be going very fast (no highway/interstate riding) until I master counter-steering and trail braking maneuvers. Right now, the only thing I have are knee pads, which were never intended for motorcycle use, but I'll be using them for that purpose. I got them when I was working for a local Wal-Mart as an overnight stocker.
