If your brother is shady, he's probably not a lawful Freemason. He likely belongs to a bogus offshoot because NO lawfully constituted lodge will ever "recruit" another person.

Following in the tradition where Prince Hall led his lodge/grand lodge for a lifetime, those lodges which drew their heritage from that source likewise had Grand Masters whose grip on the reigns of leadership would extend for decades, thus chafing the more aggressive who themselves wanted to be in charge.

I did before this thread was even made, I reached out to the grand lodge and a brother was kind enough to contact some local lodges who in turn reached out to me and were very welcoming.

Lodge was right under my nose all my life and I had no idea it existed.

I've just been anxious lately about the first meeting

That's what up. After I reached out to my local lodge they invited me to a cookout a few days later. It was really chill. Everybody was welcoming.

Which Grand Lodge did you contact?

best thing to do is talk to a mason you know from your area. ideally from the lodge you intend to join
