The game was introduced by Americans in the early 1900's. That I know....
I did a little bit more research, the short story is that it became super popular when the Americans brought it over. It was very early days in "basketball history" thus making the Philippines the early adopters of the sport in Asia which made them champions of asia 9 out of the first 10 years the tournament they held... which obviously would have been a source of pride for the nation. Guess the popularity stayed because it's a cheap and easy game to set up, you can play by yourself, with others, on the streets etc.
I'm a filipino australian, similar to the US - majority of filipinos hoop here too.
Other thing i've noticed in australia anyway is that filipinos are also heavily into hiphop moreso than other ethniciities ... i actually put this down for their love of the NBA and its connection with hiphop . i have nothing to prove this though...
