I know a lot of people that own small black business and they are reliant upon black people. My sister is an accountant in my hometown. All of her clients are black. My cousin is a lawyer. All of his clients are black. My uncle is a contractor. All that he does is build homes and make home repairs for black people.
Our folks used to only go to White lawyers, accountants and contractors. The fact that they are now using their own folks is good a thing. I don't understand why people don't understand that. We are not all barbers, beauticians and soul food restaurant owners; although those are great too. We have to start somewhere.
Great points. Folks really miss the boat when it comes to small businesses and how they can change the dynamics of a community and often times change policy as well. Also folks act like small businesses do not grow or those folks don't reinvest that money. This has a lot to do with folks not really really with black folks who own businesses.
Let me give you three quick examples. My college buddy has a father that at one time was the richest man in his small home town. My boys father worked for years as an engineer then put his money together and opened a restaurant and a barber shop. He them took that money he made and sold the barber shop and restaurant and opened a manufacturing plant in the town. The manufacturing plant grew over the years and eventually employed the most people in the small town. Now if my boys father would have never opened his restaurant and barber shop he would have never been able to start his manufacturing plant.
Second example is an older sista who my parents know. She graduated from college then worked in corporate America. She saved her money and started a catering business. Saved the money from that business and opened a day care center. Grew the day care center (employed nothing but black folks) then bought homes in the south side of Chicago. Ended up with 25 homes as rental properties. Then sold the day care center and the 25 homes and bought a high rise apartment building selling all the condos in that building. The building at one time was worth over 15 mill. Now this sista employs only black folks as security at her high rise, the door men are black. Her real estate company workers are black, her electrician is black and her contractors are black.
Third example. An old dude who was once a teacher (actually taught my dad) did 20 years as a teacher and started to buy up property in Chicago. He would buy up foreclosures during bad economic times. So much so that he owned over 40 properties that he rented out. At one time he owned every building on two blocks. He was so good with his money that he reinvested the money he made in a trucking business (which he owned 10 trucks and had nothing but black employees) and owned two McDonalds.
Not only that but because he was known to work with the alderman in his area (also donated during his campaigns) he was able to help the blocks his properties were own to be cleaned out when drug dealers and gangs were fukking with his renters.
Sadly the old man had to sell his properties due to his wife dying and his bad health. Last I heard from my dad he is like 83 and living in Florida now.
But right there that is 3 examples of black folks who took small so called mom and pop businesses and were able to reinvest that money and place it in other businesses helping them grow and having a greater impact on their communities.
