lemme get this out the way. i like american gangster. it was the last album jay's done that i actually liked from start to finish aside from a few things

but jay at his peak lyrically was reasonable doubt. he was a fukkin' lyrical acrobat with the lyrics and rhymes then

american gangster ain't better than illmatic or it was written. it's not better than the lost tapes either

American Gangster clearly had Jay's most advanced lyricism
Doesn't mean the songs are better, that's in the air, but skill wise there's a blatant increase.

It's nowhere near an album with Sunshine, I Know What Girls Like, The City Is Mine, and Real nikkaz?
The only reason why American Gangster doesn't get credit is because it came post Black Album.
I'm not trying to be controversial, I'm simply stating my opinion.

Debatable cuz AG aka RD Reduex is the GOAT our Flow Lord and Lyrical Savior Hova Da Gawd's GOATliest lyrical performance of his post-TBA era, but ain't no way it's touching the GOAT lyrical masterpiece RD or the holy grail of hustler GOATness Vol 1, not to mention the GOAT rap album TBA's GOATly wordsmithness, & those are the GOAT trio of lyrical GOATness in rap history

Best case scenario I think it's 4th cuz there's definitely an argument for it being superior to Vol 2, Vol 3, & BP2, especially since none of those match the lyrical cohesion of AG, which brilliantly plays out not only in conjuction with the movie, but the hustler experience in general with all the harsh truths that the GOAT our Flow Lord and Lyrical Savior Hova Da Gawd is infamous for being so open & introspective about

Nas factually lacks many of the skills Jay Z has in regards to literary techniques.
No drugs.
If AG came out pre black album the perception here would be different.

I always say, if you want to pull out singular lines, Jay will have Nas beat, because he's more clever. But if you want to break down entire verses, then Nas will probably get it, because he paints pictures full of imagery. Both are two of the best writers ever

No...not at all. First off this is a soundtrack...meaning Jay didn't have to dig deep to find inspiration for song material....he literally just wrote songs based off of the movies theme and scenes....MUCH easier than Nas crafting a classic from his own life experiences and the essence of ny. American gangster is basically the rewritten musical novel to a movie someone already wrote and another man already lived....it's actually the reason it was so well put together and you think it's so incredible....because he had a theatrical blueprint of it laid out before him to create it. For a great song writer like him, this was child's play. None of his own creatively conceptual albums flow like AG for this very reason....except maybe reasonable doubt. Illmatic flowed just as well if not better and lyrically is more sophisticated content wise and ITS ALL NAS's ORIGINAL CONCEPT...making it much more challenging to accomplish . This is the reason why soundtracks are usually never given the same accolades as stand alone musical albums....the latter is much harder to create...at least at classic standards.

I dunno, Jay has compelling imagery, it's just that rather than being in the form of a typical Nas storytelling verse (like say the Stillmatic Intro), it'll come in brief bars admist a verse filled with different sort of "camera" perspectives, like how he switches in and out of views on the first verse of Ignorant shyt.
Or say on the first verse of Sweet when he delivers this: "I cannot so my answer to you remains
I can walk down the hall of mirrors in Versailles
And be so satisfied when I look myself in the eyes"
Creates a beautiful image in conjunction with the introspection of the verse.
It gets across the image of a successful hustler walking down a hall contemplating life while facing down mirror after mirror forcing him to look at what got him to this place of excess in Paris and tucking away any hints of regret, like a movie scene.
Or I always like to point towards the first verse of This Life Forever in terms of an immersive Jay track, or Can I Live (first verse).
They play more like music videos than straight stories in my head.
