As a guy who doesn't root for any team but watches most games because of my gambling habit it's amazing how popular the sport is for such a mediocre product.

They'res literally two or three pretty good teams and a lot of awful to mediocre teams who will win between 6-9 games based on luck.

There is also so much bad qb play and when two bad qb's are facing each other it's literally unwatchable. Tonight will be Matt Hasselback and Ryan Mallet starting and will be an awful game yet will still get ratings :wow:

Say what you want about the nfl but the fact that they have such a popular product when it's not a good product and the whole leagues built to be between anywhere 6-10 and 10-6 is mind boggling.
Yea, if you don't have a favorite team or at least a squad you casually follow this league is all kinds of tedious. Simply the sport of football has built in advantages that inflate its ratings/popularity....

Patriotism tie in (especially in the south)
Sitcom schedule (only play once a week like a tv show)
Gambling

Take away 2 of these and the NFL is doing NBA/MLB numbers. The other sports leagues can't really duplicate these things.

That's hurt the defenses but the lack of qb's and more importantly the hard cap is why the product is so bad. Teams change rosters so drastically year to year that they'res no continuity in the sport and they'res only so many players you can pay so no team can be overly talented.

Because of the hard cap a teams window to contend is 3 or 4 years at most. The only teams with long windows are ones with all time great qb's. Having Brady Manning or Rodgers will let you contend for a decade even with a mediocre team around the qb but without one you only have a few years to win.
Exactly. Those teams that have all time QB's stay in contention just as long as any dynasty NBA teams that we've seen in the last 10yrs. Patriots=Spurs, Steelers=Lakers, Colts/Broncos with Peyton=Heat/Cavs with LeBron. Different league, same stuff.

It's not inflated. The schedule has always been like that(you cant play more than once a week) and every sport can be gambled on. Those two things will never be taken away so I dont get the inflated talking point...the popularity is what it is.

yea, obviously violence.

What I find amazing is how big their female fanbase is. I mean, obviously when you're the most popular you're gonna have big numbers in all demos but damn the size of their women viewership is astonishing.

The nfl is perfect for gambling much Moreso then other sports. I know you ride for the nfl hard but even you can't ride for the shield so hard that you think gambling isn't a huge part of it's popularity

Colts Texans will get decent ratings tonight with god awful backup qb's in it. This isn't because the product will be great it's because people have money on the game

Philly. Fucc a Eagle. I mean dat.
Agreed. Gambling, fantasy, nothing else being on, constant controversies, and then Fandom are the reason football is as big as it is.
If you just watch the games they're boring as hell if you don't have a team or fantasy player in it (and fantasy is wack tbh and not for true fans of a team but that's another discussion). Snooze level status :snooze:

The GOAT sport on the otherhand CFB is filled with excitement every week.:blessed:

Why is the NFL perfect for gambling? Of course its a reason of why its popular...but Vegas gives odds on an egg on the spoon races. You're penalizing its populairty bc people like gambling on it? Every sport has fantasy, every sport can be bet on. People enjoy the sport more so they bet on it more.

The numbers work out perfectly for gambling.

Have you ever bet on a baseball game? It's less then ideal

Baseball's an entirely different animal because there's no clock and the pitcher determines the odds. Its hard to compare to anything.

Yea I posted in the week 3 NFL thoughts thread that the product is pretty shytty right now. I can watch my team from minute 1 to 60 but the rest of these games are on as pretty much background noise, a majority of these games just aren't any good.

Couldnt have said it better. Most of the time, it's smarter to just wait until the 4th quarter to watch these games.
