Fair play - can't argue with any of that, I just question whether we ever really needed him to be bent - I guess the heritage of the brand (or baggage depending on your outlook) can push people either way.
Unless a character/world is genuinely stand-out I would usually prefer a new "universe" for a new story over re-using an old one... I can't think of many single characters I'd like to see take the lead in 24 feature films over 50 years tbh because the natural result is this half-way house sort of continuity... different writers, different actors, loose ends left loose... I much prefer the modern-TV idea of doing a similar amount of screen-time in a few years to tell a genuinely long, complex story and really dig into the characters.
Yeah I feel that. they started doing the Bond movies before any of that even happened so I can't be mad at them for it at all and I think there's something cool the way they've done it and then being able to go back and forth; even when Bond first started, there was a build of a world and continuity with him dealing with Spectre and Blofeld for 6/7 of the first movies and the only reason they stopped dealing with Spectre was due to legal issues so they had to make due but they always kept certain threads in place to relay that this is an ongoing story about one guy i.e., the death of his wife and how that affected him.
