The League went through a massive shift in the 90s to a more defensive game. Kinda similar to the 70/80s NBA and the 90s

They ended up putting in rule changes because scoring had dropped so much

Plus he had so much talent on those 80s teams, and still played with great players in the 90s but those Oilers teams in the 80s were stacked

This too

By the 90s, the league entered the “dead puck era” with teams setting up a defensive style called the “trap” which benefited teams with not much skill able to utilize this style.

There was also tons of hooking, holding and interference that would never get called. All of this contributed to the drop in scoring but once Malkin, Crosby, Ovi, Kane came into the league, the league eliminated the two line pass rule, actually called hooking/holding and scoring started to open up again to what we have today

Not big on hockey so forgive me. What happened with Wayne? Dude was on a stupid pace early in his career. Coulda easily crossed 1000 even with a drop in pace because them early numbers were that dumb. Did he change his game? Fall off? Rule changes? Combo thereof?

To add on to what has been said up top.His back was never the same:

7 years later Suter cross-checked Paul Kariya in the face, keeping him out of the 98 Olympics and I think the whole rest of the season :pacspit:

After he left Edmonton (his prime) he became more of an assist guy. The posters above nailed it. The DPE was ushered in by the Devils but 96 was still a high scoring season. I think Penguins had 4-5 100 points guys that year. 97-04 was the DPE.

Ok. People online are saying regardless of that, he still is the GOAT. Was Lemeiux that good?

Lemieux was "that good" if you're talking top five all time, with many putting him number two. He had cancer and battled some injuries, but he lived up to his hype from his youth. He was strong, powerful, and skilled.

People will play the "what if" game with Mario in terms of comparing him to Gretzky, but Gretzky was better.

@Regular_P and @MikelArteta both know Bobby Orr would have been the GOAT without injuries, and was better than Super Mario. .
