The producers of a movie with a big bow-wow factor will be in Esquimalt looking for a few good dogs and humans Tuesday afternoon.
Background casting director Erin Fikowski said a core group of “well-behaved, awesome, adorable dogs” and humans are required for Air Bud Entertainment’s Pup Star 2, which starts filming mid-November in Victoria.
The film, directed by Robert Vince, is a follow-up to Pup Star, the family-friendly musical action-comedy starring Makenzie Moss that was filmed in the capital region last year.
Pup Star, which relates the exploits of Tiny, a cute Yorkie pup with a big singing voice, premiered at Cineplex theatres in Canada this fall and can be seen on Netfllix.
“We really need bigger dogs because they’re easier to see on camera,” said Fikowski, adding producers of the film that picks up where Pup Star left off are seeking medium to large dogs that are not under 20 pounds.
A black Puli — “a dog that looks like it has mop hair” — is also required, as well as one brown Yorkie puppy at least 16 weeks old to play Tiny in flashbacks.
“We’re looking particularly for younger owners (ages 15 to 25), like students, but anyone who has a family dog and who has the time to be there are good,” she said.
The four-legged performers would be featured in “a kind of American Idol for dogs,” said Fikowski. “That’s what we are trying to recreate.”
Any dogs with “exceptional talents” will also be looked at between 2:30 and 4:30 p.m. at 836 Viewfield Rd.
The producers are also trying to locate a Weimaraner that was on set during last year’s shoot, she said.
Ideally, dogs and their owners should appear in person to “show us what you’ve got” but photos and information can also be posted on the Casting Call Round 2 Facebook page.
Dogs and their owners should be available to work from the start of principal photography to early December.
Callbacks will most likely be held on Thursday, Fikowski said.
