I LIVE IN A CARDBOARD BOX!
With Iron Man 3 hitting theaters in just a couple of weeks, press chatter has once again turned to Robert Downey Jr.'s future with Marvel. The actor's contract ends with this latest sequel, and that leaves many fans wondering what that means for our beloved Tony Stark.

In a recent interview with GQ, Downey Jr. explained what's been going through his head in terms of retiring the character.

"This period of time, this shall pass," Downey Jr. said. "Fortunately I've been around the block enough -- I'm not ill-prepared. And I love change. I love it when a lightning bolt hits the genny and you're down for two hours on the set. Now, this isn't a lightning strike, this is like the warning of a gathering storm."

The "gathering storm" in question refers to Downey Jr.'s injury on the set of Iron Man 3, which shut down the production for several weeks.

"It got me thinking about how big the message from your cosmic sponsor needs to be before you pick it up," he says. "How many genre movies can I do? How many follow-ups to a successful follow-up are actually fun? Because, as quiet as it's kept, I come from a family of very innovative writers and directors and actors and artists... So there's this kind of legacy of souls from what I consider to be a very particular time in entertainment, and I'm sensing a return to that -- it's what me and the missus are doing next. It's not unlike: I heard Brady signed on for three more years with New England, and then he's done being a QB, because he'll be 40. I'm 47, and I'll be 50."

Although he hasn't formally signed on for The Avengers 2 yet, it's extremely likely that Downey Jr. will at least turn up for that film, if what he's hinting at now is true -- although it's no secret that money is at least a partial factor. The actor earned $50 million for The Avengers, and he admits that payment is in consideration for the sequel. "Me, the agents and the lawyers are having a bit of a ball right now," he noted.

That said, it's possible that The Avengers 2 could be the end of the road for Downey Jr.'s Tony Stark. Following that, does Marvel recast the role -- or... could Joss Whedon be planning to kill Iron Man? A lot to consider, but until then, we'll have to wait and see how it all shakes out.

:shaq2::snoop:

If only they started making these movies when RDJ was in his 30's. I hope Marvel throws a lot of $$$ at him to get to stay. He's the rock star of The Avengers. Thoughts?

Funny you should mention that because he said he's going for one:

The Oscar-nominated actor believes he will take home an Academy Award before he dies.

“Because I’m young enough, and I’m running down being occupied with these kind of genre movies, close enough,” the 48-year-old actor said. “Even the next thing we’re doing with [my wife, Susan Downey], I’m so confident about it. It’s the best script the studio has; it’s the best thing I’ve read in years.”

He added, “Look, even if I don’t get one directly, eventually they’re just going to have to give me one when I get old. So no matter how you slice it, I’m getting one.”

:scusthov: at how marvel is telling everyone up front how much they plan to whore its franchise

They're gonna need lower grade actors eventually, but the real problem is trying to live up to a comic book continuum thats gonna end up being impossible to recreate. I wont be mad if RDJ takes the bread and gets out before the studios realize they're in over their heads.

"Whore the franchises"? :wtf:

Unlike other franchises they're talking 2-3 movies into the future because they're trying to map out a cohesive story. They got sequels to every major character planned leading up to "Avengers 2", and a few movies mapped out after that. They planned out every movie before "Avengers", what did people think was gonna happen after that? They'd just kinda play it by ear?

I'm still baffled as to why people are acting like RDJ is the ONLY person who can play this character. I don't see anything that he brings to Iron Man that wasn't already there in the comics.

Just get another Actor to fill the role when Downey's job is up.

People get on my nerves with that "No one will ever be as good of a _____ as _____". Even though there are countless examples that prove otherwise.

If theyre not gonna whore the franchises they're gonna have to start killing heroes fast. The avengers cast is gonna start looking like wutang.

And there's going to be an iron man 4 believe that, and maybe a 5 to lead up to avengers 3. How is that not whoring? Maybe five+ movies.... tony starks gonna be the james bond of comic books

comic books characters are always replaceable because of all the material there was on the characters before an actor ever took the reigns. and besides, no matter how good and familiar he is in the role, we go to iron man movies for iron man and not rdj

It's not whoring because they made it perfectly clear that this is what they were gonna do. If they dropped "Ironman", then it blew up, then they said "ok, let's do part 2" solely because it made a lot of money, that would be whoring. They had "Thor", "Captain American" and "Hulk" mapped out before they even knew if there was any interest in those characters. They got "Antman" planned to lead into the phase 3 movies before any of the phase 2 movies have even dropped.

I thought Dempsey from Grey's could do it potentially, but RDJ is that dude IMO.

This right here.

The Batman series did well even with Christian Bale doing his best cookie monster impersonation. I think Iron Man can be as successful if the writing and directing is good.
