Just as a general statement... you guys factor in later work/consistency wayyyyy too much when discussing producers.

Who the fukk cares which legends have put out some decent releases in the past decade? Whats more important is who reached that apex when they were in their prime, and who has an overall stronger body of work.

Yup and exactly! Co sign :myman:

there's a reason why people always say a different epmd album when you ask them what their best is. the first 3(arguably 4), are classic albums. it's not like nas where it's illmatic, or big with ready to die, or rakim with paid in full. there's no definitive answer because all 4 of their first albums were amazingly produced. even the 2 solo's that sermon did were nice as hell on the boards. his whole shiit was brought to a stop w/ the sampling laws tho. he would come w/ nice ass shiit out of nowhere, but he could never keep it consistent like he used to. it's funny cause dudes sit here and shiit on sermon, but they'll give rza a pass for all the mediocrity he's put out in the past years. sermon could give you beats that sound like they're straight from the west coast, or he could give you some southern shiit like "it ain't" for scarface. his sound was so diverse it was crazy.

rza gets a pass cause hes the rza. dudes going down as one of the great innovative producers in music history. dude dropped some trash occasionally but rza post wu tang forever had some great beats/albums still. rza fukked up by being god from 94-97. he set the bar into orbit.

sermon is one of the most underrated producers ever. I'd def throw him in my top 10. id venture to say hes about even with premier and pete rock, though i find pete rocks sound more appealing. Dre is dre, aka same props as rza.

e dub is def up there. dj quik being better than eric sermon is comedy. when you realize how much work eric sermon put in you understand why he could be top 5 all time. I love dilla (who the internets and okayplayer rap fans deem a god) but id have to pit sermon ahead of him too. kanye vs sermon is a hard choice for me but id give it to eric for being the primary producer with no help (even tho kanye is a better artist overall). just blaze dont deserve to be put into these discussions

good thread. props to eric sermon

this song was played all summer when it dropped wit my cousins

There's like 50 modern day producers I'd put ahead of a lot of these old school guys

Also Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo aka The Neptunes are the greatest producers in rap history

Erick was always in my Top 5-6.

Dude had so many classic beats just with the first couple of EPMD albums alone! Joints that you've heard a million times that are his. His career was ridiculously stellar before even '91, and he still had mad classic shyt after that.
