Africans accuse African Americans of "appropriating" their culture (legitimate criticism?)

Its because Aframs are the most influential historically and over time some people got salty about this and started throwing shade...

What Id say:lolbron:

....she's saying all of this while jacking from Aframs but at the same time trying to justify the appropriations by trying to convince herself and others that these styles belong to Africa and Aframs are the ones doing the stealing:mjlol:

Just to chime in on Will's accent really quickly....don't forget that Hollywood films *often* lighten accents in order to increase understanding of dialogue. Even in biopics.

I feel like Meryl Streep started this "perfect accent" nonsense, probably because she's not as good as people say she is *outside* of nailing accents. This trend is actually more recent in nature though. (This is yet another example of how oscar-chasing has hurt films...but it's really a topic for The Film Room, not The Root).

Check out some of those Bond movies (Particularly the older ones)...than go talk to an actual Russian. Night and day, and rightfully so from a product standpoint, "realism" takes a back seat to the majority of your audience actually understanding what the fukking character is saying. Laying on some thick ass accent might be more "realistic", but it's not necessarily good for the audience, and can be a bigger distraction for the actor, taking away from other aspects of the performance.

She says this like this is our fault.

She's damn right they don't have the platforms...and it's embarrassing and ridiculous.

We are in the belly of the beast, often scraping by what we can, in competition with many other groups for cultural capital. Historically...we've created mediums and had them stolen from us. Africans have "the continent to themselves", if they want larger platforms, what's stopping them from building them?

I mean, maybe "Nollywood" takes off and this becomes the centerpiece of their platform, more power to em. Regardless, they control their destiny, and shouldn't be looking at our plate when they can fix their own.

Damn right it's embarrassing and ridiculous :snoop:

She's seriously whining about this, when it just makes her look absolutely terrible...

Listen: there is no such thing as west indian, no such thing as a haitian, jamaican etc. All of us are confused nigers who had different masters, and adopted different aspects of their cultures and speech, while retaining certain "African" traits, if we were able to. Just embrace your nigerdom and lets unite in the name of blackness.

Nope. Blackness is diverse and to be respected, not made uniform.
