That's why during Black History Month we celebrate great Black Americans, not kings from foreign lands.

Now, I'm not saying that African history isn't interesting, or good to know... I'm just saying that as a black person in the Americas our history starts at the Slave Trade and everything we've achieved after.

The person who created Black History Month, Dr Carter G Woodson, disagrees with you. Matter of fact he disagrees with you so much, that he created a the Journal of Negro History that......wait for it........records our entire history :krs:

Including Africa, the Caribbean and South America. It's free on Kindle and it's a good primer on black history (up to that point in time).

But you're more than welcome to think our history began with slavery :manny:

Our history and our culture were completely destroyed when we were forcibly brought to America in chains. And now it is important for us to know that our history did not begin with slavery. We came from Africa, a great continent, wherein live a proud and varied people, a land which is the new world and was the cradle of civilization. Our culture and our history are as old as man himself and yet we know almost nothing about it.

Sure we had a history before slavery, but let's face it, there's no connection to that past anymore.

After 3 or 4 generations you lose touch with that. Most ppl wouldn't even know what African country or tribe they came from. That history, for practical purposes, is History.

I'm curious what kind of connections Blacks in the Americas have with their Africa. It seems to me that we don't ever recognize that as being part of our history. We only acknowledge our time here.

We're from the Caribbean, or Brazil, or America. We're not from Africa (even though we all are, of course)

I don't like to label things as being dumb because I like to get other peoples points of view, but damn, this is by far, the dumbest thing I've read this year.

What is black to you? Why can I trace my genetics to West/Central Africa? Are they not my ancestors as well; are they not apart of my history as a black individual? You need to explain further.

African Americans in this country dont identify with their roots because white supremacy made it an objective to wash away our beginnings. If you think our history begins with slavery then it proves a point that blacks in this country started as inferiors and as a result are inferior till this day.

It's a cultural connection based on our shared heritage. It's in our music, our food, and our culture. @KidStranglehold has made a couple threads that directly shows the link between us in America and our family back home in Africa.

I understand Malcolms point of view and I don't disagree with it.

It really is important for our own self worth to know that Blacks aren't inferior.

I understand that in almost all of the Americas the connection to Africa was erased by the Slave Owners. But that bolsters my point. Our history here starts at that point.

I would like to hear from ppl of different countries. Where does history begin in Brazil? Jamaica? Grenada? DR and Haiti? Cuba?, etc.

They probably acknowledge that they were included in the Slave Trade but I doubt they go back and connect to any particular African nation

There's definitely a link to Africa, but I wouldn't call it a strong connection.

The food isn't African heritage food, its Jamaican, or Cuban, etc. The history of us on this side of the earth starts after the Slave Trade

Well no shyt there's not a strong connection. Part of slavery was to ensure that our connection to our history, language, culture was removed. Matter of fact during the early 20th century one of the fears of cacs in Africa was that blacks in the US would link with blacks in Africa and kick out colonial European powers. The fear was so great that the US government banned passports to black people to Ethopia and other parts of Africa.

But regarding black history month, you're 100% wrong. Our history didn't begin with slavery. By the time white people were beginning to finally crawl out of their caves in Europe, Africans had seen the rise and fall of multiple kingdoms (Kemet, Nubia, Ethiopia, etc).

African history is black history. It's always been that way and the person who created Negro History Week (now known as Black History Month) intended it to be that way.

But I seriously doubt any evidence I post would change your mind :ehh:

How can you say you agree with Malcolm when Malcolm never believed our history began with Slavery :patrice:

Simple. You acknowledge your beginnings and take pride in your progress and accomplishments.

How can you say you agree with Malcolm when Malcolm never believed our history began with Slavery :patrice:

Because for those ppl that have low self-esteem it's good for them to know we're not inherently inferior.

Hilarious considering the reason Malcolm made that quote was for people like you who believes our history began with Slavery :heh:
