Skin of the Sea by Natasha Bowen
Skin-of-the-Sea-by-Natasha-Bowen.jpg

A way to survive.
A way to serve.
A way to save.

Simi prayed to the gods, once. Now she serves them as Mami Wata--a mermaid--collecting the souls of those who die at sea and blessing their journeys back home.

But when a living boy is thrown overboard, Simi goes against an ancient decree and does the unthinkable--she saves his life. And punishment awaits those who dare to defy the gods.

To protect the other Mami Wata, Simi must journey to the Supreme Creator to make amends. But all is not as it seems. There's the boy she rescued, who knows more than he should. And something is shadowing Simi, something that would rather see her fail . . .

Danger lurks at every turn, and as Simi draws closer, she must brave vengeful gods, treacherous lands, and legendary creatures. Because if she fails, she risks not only the fate of all Mami Wata, but also the world as she knows it.

Changa's Safari by Milton J Davis
512PoIM3sOL._SX322_BO1204203200_.jpg

A Historical Fantasy novel set in the 15th century. Changa is an exiled warrior Kongo prince who was sold into slavery by an evil sorcerer called Usenge. There he was forced to fight in the fighting pits. Over time he gains his freedom and becomes a Swahili merchant sailor with his own crew. From there he goes on adventures of trade and battles.
There are 5 books, one of them being a prequel. I've got 3 of them. Think of it like an 'African Sinbad'. A fun read.

Milton J Davis writes a lot of Speculative fiction with an African twist. Seek him out.
A vid of Milton J. Davis talking about what inspired him to write The Changa's Safari series.

The Hated
the_hated2_solid_comix.jpeg

Set in an alternate timeline, where the Civil War ended in a truce, and America is now two nations, the North stayed free, while the south continued slavery. The story follows Araminta Free, a gun-slinging Black woman bounty hunter who hunts down war criminals. Caught between fighting Confederate raiders who kidnap free Blacks and bring them back down south to slavery and helping the Liberators, who risk their lives to free them, Free suffers no fools.
THE HATED inspired by the spaghetti westerns of directors like Sergio Leone (The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly) and Sergio Corbucci (The Great Silence). Written by David F. Walker (Luke Cage, Shaft), THE HATED is drawn by Sean Damien Hill (Is'Nana the WereSpider, Marvel's Voices Legacy), and colored by Shaun Struble.

Jaycen Wise
jw_-_sai_xong_-_split_working_2_0.jpg

Jaycen Wise is an immortal warrior from Ancient Kush who fights to restore artifacts of Black history. Unlike Laura Croft or Indiana Jone, Wise is an "anti-Tomb Raider," as he steals treasure back from museums and private collectors, returning stolen artifacts and religious items to indigenous people and sacred spaces. Not only is Jaycen Wise an immortal with a lifetime of fighting skills, but his eidetic memory also extends to the spiritual plane, where he can access all of the memories of his ancestors.

Uraeus (Richard G. Tyler II) is the writer and creator of the Black Heroes Matter franchise and a seasoned comic creator whose comic Indigo was optioned by NBC in 2015. Although Jaycen Wise as a graphic novel over a decade ago, Uraeus sold the story independently and exclusively at conventions.

VILLAINUS: A CYBERPUNK NOIR GRAPHIC NOVEL
Shatter is the ultimate threat to the System. How far will they go to eliminate Shatter? How far will Shatter go to kill the System?
80 pages of a sci-fi graphic novel where afropunk meets cyberpunk.

Was the whole blonde box cut popular back in the early 90s? Outside of Demo Man and Meteor Man I don't remember anyone rockin it.

I finally finished this book today and gotdamn it was some piff :whew:

My nikka Tau Solarin took so many damn L's during this book :mjcry:

This book was way darker than the first one and I can only imagine that the 3rd book will be even grimier :damn:

There are a lot of recommendations in this thread, but which ones are the closest to this? :lupe: I like gory, violent stories like this one

I say that the only books that are close to 'The Burning' series is the Imaro series by Charles Saunders, but even that isn't as dark and bloody.
