They can't compete with trinidad's or Brazil's so they have it at different times
Carnival traditionally marks the beginning of Lent

Wouldn't make it less authentic, is what I was trying to get at. Christmas isn't any less ceremonial or authentic because it's celebrated on an arbitrary date.

Some carnivals, namely Barbados, don't have religious undertones (Their carnival represents the end of harvest season. 'Crop [is] Over') nothing to do with lent.
