Farhood Shocked That Broner is Such a Big Underdog With Garcia
Hall of Famer and Showtime Boxing commentator, Steve Farhood, is shocked that former four division champion Adrien Broner is a 5-1 underdog against Mikey Garcia, who is moving up from the lightweight division to face Broner at the junior welterweight limit of 140-pounds.
Broner (33-2, 24 KOs) is unbeaten at or below 140 pounds with his only two losses coming against welterweight world champions Marcos Maidana and Shawn Porter.
Garcia has never tasted defeat with a very solid record of 36-0, 30 KOs, and coming off a WBC lightweight world title he won in January with a vicious knockout of unbeaten Dejan Zlaticanin in Las Vegas.
They will battle later tonight at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York. The bout will headline a Showtime televised doubleheader.
Based on the facts and the talents of both boxers, Farhood is stumped at how Broner is such a big underdog in the contest.
Even if Garcia wins, Farhood can't picture him doing so by knockout. Broner has shown a very solid chin in the past against hard hitters like Porter, Maidana and several others. He's only been down in the Maidana fight.
"The odds are fascinating, Broner’s a 5-1 underdog, that is amazing. The fact of the matter is, we are always looking at Broner from his outside the ring activities; not making weight, the disturbing and sometimes bizarre behavior. What we need to look at now, and this fight is going to tell us this, is he just good enough physically?," Farhood told On The Ropes Boxing Radio.
"We always assumed Broner was better than he showed because maybe he wasn’t into it as much or he wasn’t committed as much, but he’s such a slow starter and he falls behind in fights and he’s not the biggest puncher in the world. Does Broner have what it takes skillwise against Mikey Garcia, who is such a well rounded and intelligent fighter? I can understand Mikey Garcia being the favorite, but 5-1? That shocked me, and you really have to ask the question, how big a fight is this for Adrien Broner? If he loses, where is he at?"
"I really am mystified by it because even if Garcia wins, I’ll be surprised if he stops Broner because Broner is the bigger guy who can take a 140lb punch. The reason I guess is because Mikey is such a smart fighter. Is there a better young fighter in America? You got Errol Spence, Deontay Wilder, but Mikey may be that good, and the odds reflect that."
