Broner: I've Got Too Many Baby Mamas, Kids to Not Make Weight!

NEW YORK – Adrien Broner offered 13 reasons Monday why he won’t have any difficulty making weight for his fight against Mikey Garcia.

Broner jokingly referred during a press conference in Manhattan to his seven children and six “baby mamas” as all the incentive he needs to make the 140-pound limit for their July 29 fight at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. According to Broner, he’ll have to pay a $500,000 penalty if he comes in over 140 pounds when he and Garcia weigh in July 28.

“Everybody be like, ‘Is he gonna make weight?’ The weight’s not a problem,” Broner said. “You know, I haven’t made weight lately because for what? And they gonna pay me the same if I fight at 44? F*** yeah I’m gonna fight at 44! And then everybody be makin’ a big deal about it when, on paper, it say 44 and I make 44, and they’re like, ‘Oh, he’s overweight.’ Like, ‘Sh*t, I made weight. Look at the paper.’

“Now I got a reason to make 140, you know? Because we ain’t about to pay the man to put these hands on. They talkin’ about giving up half-a-million if I don’t make weight. Y’all ain’t think I’m gonna make weight? I ain’t got a dollar to give to nobody right now. All my baby mamas and kids, man, y’all be crazy! Sh*t! Listen man, you know, but I’m definitely training my ass off, man. And I think this will be one of the best performances of my career and I think this will take me to the superstardom, where I need to be.”

The hefty financial penalty in their contracts is understandable because Broner (33-2, 24 KOs) has had trouble making weight in each of his past two fights and Garcia (36-0, 30 KOs) is moving up from 135 pounds to 140 for their 12-round fight next month.

Two weeks before Broner’s last fight, Adrian Granados revealed that Broner made him “a take-it or leave-it offer” to increase their original contract weight from 142 pounds to 147.

Granados agreed to the late change because he didn’t want to pass up a career-high $250,000 payday. Broner beat Granados (18-5-2, 12 KOs) by split decision in a 10-round fight February 18 in Cincinnati, Broner’s hometown.

The day before Broner’s previous fight in April 2016, he weighed in at 140½ pounds for his WBA super lightweight title defense against England’s Ashley Theophane. Broner didn’t attempt to come back to the scale at 140 pounds and was stripped of his title a day prior to defeating Theophane (40-7-1, 11 KOs) by ninth-round technical knockout in Washington, D.C.
