Going around the forum and the old forum, it became very prevalent the idea that people accept African-Americans (or blacks in general) are genetically superior in terms of athleticism and athletic proficiency, especially in certain sports. Now some of the comments are tongue-in-cheek, but I have a question to the people that really believe that:

Why only accept the statistics that show your race in a positive light in terms of genetics, and ignore others?

I think all should be ignored, but some of you don't. Why?

Idk, I take it as some kind of conditioning from slavery. I haven't had a chance to really take any genetics courses or really read into what modern science says, but I think it's undeniable to say that after span of slavery that a vast majority of African Americans are physically superior to others. Mainly because we were a population being breed to do strenuous labor.

The slaves who survived the trip from Africa, to the West Indies, and then America had to be pretty strong. Because a sizeable portion of slaves were wiped out along the trip due to: disease, malnourishment, beatings, rebellions etc....

They had the biggest slaves alpha male slaves, going around impregnating all the female slaves, which carried on strong genetics.....

Now back on to the point you were trying to make. I think if we accept this idea of being physical superior to others by dominating athletics, in way it's also like saying we should accept the concept of being intellectually inferior to others. Going by this logic, all the general audience has to do pull out some random statistic about blacks not graduating high school, but playing sports all the time trying to make it to the NFL / NBA.

I don't really buy the idea that blacks are genetically superior in terms of athleticism. It's just a matter of culture and social circumstance IMO.

In the early 20th century, professional boxing was dominated by Jews. Does that mean Jews are somehow genetically advantaged? I think not.

it all should be ignored because all that other stuff is cosmetic (looks) and not all blacks are good at athletics.

i think most of the evidence is anecdotal at this point, as to the best of my knowledge no real studies have been done to determine "athleticism"...but....

if we are looking at anecdotal evidence then i could see where years of selective breeding could lend an edge on certain things for certain people, plus if you look at things like the olympics, especially black folk are allowed and have some interest in playing they tend to dominate the sport.

also:

even in another language you should be able to get it (sorry couldn't find the english version)

I agree with this. There hasn't been nearly enough time and separation in the non-African, Black diaspora to encourage this kind of thinking. The idea that slavery was some kind of social darwinist institution is also off-base. Sure, weaker ones died off, like they did everywhere, but slaves in America were a huge investment- masters couldn't afford to have slaves just dying all over the place because of how expensive they were and how critical they were to the plantation economy. They needed them alive. Slaves were rarely worked to death, etc.

Also, the social pressures are a big part of the situation concerning Black athletes in the status quo. It's one of the few things Black people are actually encouraged to pursue, and that has become seriously ingrained in the community to the point where a greater percentage of kids from the Black community see sports as the only viable career path for them. When you combine that with the systemic racism that actively works to slow down or prevent Black representation in other fields, it's going to produce what looks to be a grossly biased overrepresentation, the same way certain Asian immigrant cultures where kids are only expected to be laywers, doctors, or scientists produce overrepresentation in those fields. As Acri noted, the circumstance wasn't like this earlier in the century, but not just because of segregation.

It's obviously taboo and a sore point. If there was ever any definitive proof supporting a genetic component to intelligence, current social policy would be turned on its head. Most people aren't willing to stomach this possibility.

Are we in the 1900s? :stopitslime:

you said the world would be turned on it's head. All we would get is a repeat of those early years. Ask your grandfather what they thought of minorities back then or even those that were from western europe. You can still see some that in the stereotypes they have today (blacks being seen as lazy and dumb, Jews being seen as greedy etc...). It all started from some where and back then they backed up there beliefs with proof.

It wasn't taboo to think that about minorities back then. It was more taboo to think minorities were equal. Today, a large portion of whites might secretly think blacks are inferior, but most of them would be uncomfortable with voicing their concerns in public, even if some hypothetical piece of research confirmed their views. It's far too politically incorrect to voice opinions like these. The only whites who vocalize these thoughts are white trash. Polite society deems these views as low class.

I see where your getting at but it has not been that long ago since people were thinking in the opposite direction. If evidence did come out people would use it to there advantage they may not be blatant about it like they were in the past but they would use it to there advantage.
