I'm not exactly sure what to say about an effort as ugly this one. The team played some of its worst defense of the entire season tonight. The bigs did well scoring in the first half, but the guards got away from feeding them in the second half. That meant there was no keeping up pace with the Wiz, who I will repeat, faced virtually no resistance regardless of how they felt like scoring. Our would be star is struggling mightily right now; our young guys aren't getting bigger opportunities; and honestly it feels like the wheels are coming off at this point. The team has some soul searching to do. If they want to recapture the early season magic, they'll need sustained efforts on the road and honestly...I don't see that happening with the way these guys have been performing. The Pelicans performance just seems like an outlier.
Jack: None of the starters are getting props for this trash. Jack was the worst of the bunch. 10 pts, 4 asts, 2 boards on 5/11 in 28 minutes. That doesn't look awful but he had 4 TO's and got absolutely torched on defense. The Wiz would run a play where Gortat screened the Center and John Wall would have a one on one with Jack. Wall literally got to the basket completely untouched like Jack wasn't there each time. Offensively his scoring came at the expense of ball movement. He was a detriment all night. Seriously, just start Frank and call up Burke to try backing him up. I don't think he's any kind of answer but he's worth a damned shot over Jack and Sessions.
Lance: I'm just not sure why the guy is starting to only play 14 minutes. 3 pts, 1 ast and 1 board in that time for Lance. As evidenced by his statline, Lance didn't do much of anything. The end.
Lee: Bradley Beal torched him and he didn't do nearly enough to try and pressure Beal on the other end. 8 pts, 3 asts, 2 stls in 28 minutes for Lee. It wouldn't be a bad line because he shot 50% from the field and hit both his three's, but the way Beal beat him on the other end makes this a particularly disappointing effort.
KP: 16 pts, 6 boards, 1 ast, 2 blocks in 36 minutes. 5/13 from the field, 1/4 from three and 3 TO's in that span. Your star player just can't put those pedestrian, inefficient numbers up and expect to win. Something's off with KP. It could be mental, could be fatigue, could be injury or just a rut...but something's off and this team doesn't stand a chance until he gets out of it. The Pelicans win was the one game he played well, no coincidence that everybody looked worlds better in that one. First half KP was solid and they were in it. Second half KP was invisible and they got smoked. Granted, the defense could have picked him up but not with the units Hornacek leaves out there for a majority of the game. It's up to KP to overcome his coach at this point, not be saved by him.
Kanter: He played well on offense in the first half but defensively he got cooked. The Wizards made him run through a decent amount of screens and he struggled with it all night. 12 pts, 4 boards and foul trouble for Kanter over 18 minutes. Honestly, I think this was one of his weakest defensive games in recent history and the foul trouble kept him from making up for that on the scoreboard or glass.
Beas: In the absence of KP's A game, Beasley has kinda stepped up his production. 20 pts, 9 boards, 3 asts, 2 blks, 2 stls over a 25 minute stanza. Beas was unstoppable again. He made some really nice passes not just on those 3 assists. Defensively he actually looked motivated, especially picking up John Wall on a switch at one point. He played the most inspired ball on the team.
Frank: Got in the lane a bit more, mixed results on the trips inside but still a promising sign. The most fun I had watching tonight was when Frank locked in on Wall. He poked the ball loose and made Wall have some tough possessions which was just great to see. As a matter of fact, Wall gave up the rock at that point; Beal went to work on Ron Baker to get some momentum back. That was AWESOME. The rest of the game, well, he didn't do too much. He seemed more content to let the ball run through Beasley and periodically KOQ or KP later in the game...and apparently defense is less important these days because that meant it was time for Jarrett Jack to return and play until a minute left on the clock. 7 pts, 1 ast, 1 board, 1 stl (should have been 2) and 1 TO for Frank over 20 minutes. At this point in the season, with Jack playing such awful defense consistently, Frank needs to get over 25 minutes any night that he's healthy.
Doug: 3/8 for 10 points and 3 boards in 25 minutes out of Doug. He still hasn't found his shooting touch and the team could really use an outburst. He hasn't been getting the boards and assists to make up for poor shooting. Defensively, he and Beasley seem to have a miscommunication or two a game (I got deja vu typing this) but he's mostly pretty average there. It wasn't an awful outting but it was average in every way.
KOQ: Another spirited performer out of the bunch. 13 pts, 10 boards, 2 asts, a steal and a block over 24 minutes for KOQ. He was also 6/10 from the field and played pretty good defense compared to the rest of the team...not really saying much but still. Kylo's been trending up lately and with increased minutes he continued to produce at a high rate. He should get some more time.
Baker: Joakim Noah's free throw form, Shawn Marion shooting, Reggie Miller, and now add Ron Baker driving for a lay-up to my NBA all-time ugly list. Frank probably plays more tentative as a direct result of how ugly a Baker drive looks. He did have some nice dishes though. 2/5 for 4 pts, 3 asts and 1 stl in 19 minutes. Having to guard Beal was too much of an ask but Baker turned in a good effort on defense as well. He wasn't all that bad...those drives though!
Willy and Dotson: These two got in the game with 1:38 seconds on the clock. I'm not sure there's any benefit to that, but at least Dotson took a jumper I guess.
Hornacek: Full Pennywise status tonight from Hornacek, dude seems to put the kids in tough situations for no damned reason. His aversion to changing a starting unit that has just looked awful and momentum killing for a while now is brutal. We're basically stuck in purgatory watching the Knicks amble through half court sets until Tim Hardaway is healthy enough to give our starting line-up somebody that can sprint. The third quarter collapse felt endless which is usually a good time for a time out, a substitution, a technical...something. He also played Lee, Jack and KP extensive minutes in a blowout on the second night of a back to back. Tonight was the kind of night that leaves you contemplating how awkward it would be to fire Hornacek and have to tell Rambis there's no way in hell he's getting another interim head coaching shot mid-season because if Scott Perry had the grapes to do it all; that'd buy a couple seasons of praise from me...maybe it's the weather.
