Alabama town's first Black mayor, who had been locked out of office, to return under proposed settlement

NEWBERN, Ala. — The first Black mayor of a small Alabama town, who said white officials locked him out of town hall, will return to the role under the terms of a proposed settlement agreement.
Patrick Braxton will be recognized as the lawful mayor of the town of Newbern, under the terms of a proposed agreement to settle a lawsuit between Braxton and the town. The settlement was filed Friday and, if approved by U.S. District Judge Kristi K. DuBose, will end the long-running dispute over control of the town government, pave the way for Braxton to take over as the town’s first Black mayor and allow the seating of a new city council.

“I’m pleased with the outcome and the community is pleased. I think they are more pleased that they can voice their opinion and vote,” Braxton, 57, said Monday

Remember the first Black mayor of a small town in Alabama who was locked out of his position by bigoted white residents? As of June 21, 2024, a federal ruling affirmed that Patrick Braxton is the rightful mayor of Newbern, Alabama. The court declared that he is entitled to all the powers, privileges, and duties of the mayoral office, following his civil rights lawsuit against racial discrimination that denied him the role solely based on his race. — America

After Years of Litigation, First Black Mayor in Rural Alabama Town Gets to Serve

July 23, 2024
Patrick Braxton is overwhelmed with gratitude.
He’s been juggling a yearslong legal battle to serve as the lawful mayor of his hometown, Newbern, Alabama. After years of harassment, his rural town enters a new chapter: Its first Black mayor will finally get to serve.
Braxton will be reinstated as mayor of Newbern, according to a settlement reached on July 23 and signed by U.S. District Judge Kristi K. Dubose. After 60 years of no elections, residents will get to exercise their right to vote. The town has also pledged to hold regular municipal elections beginning in 2025.
