Adrien Broner: I'm Going To Destroy John Molina!
Posted by: Rick Reeno on 3/4/2015 .

By Rick Reeno

Las Vegas, MGM Grand - Former three division world champion Adrien 'The Problem' Broner (29-1, 22KOs) is promising pain and punishment when he steps in the ring on Saturday night in the NBC televised co-feature against dangerous junior welterweight puncher John Molina (27-5, 22KOs).

Broner has won two in a row since suffering his first career defeat to Marcos Maidana in December 2013. He bounced back last May with a ten round unanimous decision over Carl Molina and then came in September with a twelve round decision over Emmanuel Taylor.

Molina was stopped in the eleventh round of his '2014 Fight of The Year' battle with Lucas Matthysse in April 2014 - a fight where there were five knockdowns between both boxers. He then came back in September and lost a ten round decision to former champion Humberto Soto.

"This was one of the best training camps that I've ever been in, honestly. I'm ready physically and mentally and I'm going to destroy this kid. You just have to see me on fight night, Saturday night. I'm not trying to down talk anybody but I think nobody can run the sport like I can after Mayweather and Pacquiao are gone. I'm going to do what I got to do. He is a talented guy who can hit but I feel like I'm on another level," Broner said.

Abner Mares: Jhonny Gonzalez Can't Help Reyes Win
Posted by: Rick Reeno on 3/4/2015 .

By Rick Reeno

Las Vegas, Nevada - Former three division world champion Abner Mares (28-1-1, 15KOs) is not worried about the words of advice that WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez is providing to Arturo Santos Reyes (18-4, 5KOs).

Mares is facing Santos on Saturday night as part of the NBC televised debut of 'Premier Boxing Champions.' Santos and Gonzalez are both promoted by Oswaldo Kuchle in Mexico. In a recent interview, Gonzalez revealed that he helped prepare Reyes for the fight and advised him of certain tactics to use against Mares.

Gonzalez scored a first round stoppage over Mares in August of 2013. The words of advice have provided a boost to Reyes, who vowed to finish Mares off.

"The reason he's saying that, and I get it, he's under the same banner as Jhonny. They have the same promoter and they are telling him, or whoever [is telling him] to say this and that but I don't let it get to me. Jhonny is saying he gave him advice. What did he tell him about? That lucky left hook that he landed, because he didn't outbox me, he didn't outwork me. It was just a good punch that he caught me with, the left hand, and that was it but I was getting up too. After I take care of [Reyes], we'll fight Jhonny," Mares told BoxingScene.com.

John Molina Jr. shares the key to his success both inside the ring and out of it
Mar 04, 2015 By Jason Bracelin
John Molina Jr.’s words are as direct and to-the-point as one of his punches.

John%20Molina%20486994919%20copy.jpg

John Molina Jr.'s career has been defined by his tenacity in the ring.

“Do you know how many times I should have said, ‘OK, I’m done. Let me pack it up?’” the hard-hitting 140-pounder asks following a long day of training for his Premier Boxing Champions fight Saturday night against Adrien Broner.

Molina doesn’t wait for an answer—the question he’s posed is a rhetorical one—because he’s made his name by not packing it up even when it might have seemed advisable for him to do so.

“The key to my career is discouragement,” he explains. “If you can get past discouragement—with anything in life—you can make it.”

Case in point: When Molina got his first title shot against former 135-pound champ Antonio DeMarco in September 2012, he ate a thundering right hand early in Round 1 and ended up getting knocked out 40 seconds into the fight.

“I was supposed to curl up and disappear after that,” Molina says. “But I knew that I was better than that. That was a fluke.”

Three fights later, Molina would demonstrate his mettle with a come-from-behind victory over then-undefeated prospect Mickey Bey, knocking him out with less than a minute left in a fight that Molina was losing on the judges’ scorecards at the time.

“I’ve gotten fan mail from all over the world saying that when I came back and knocked the guy out with 58 seconds left, that inspired them to get through a hard work week,” Molina says. “To me, that’s huge. It means a lot to me.”

Since then, Molina was in the 2014 fight of the year against Lucas Matthysee. With Broner now in his sights, Molina is eyeing the sky.

“With a victory on March 7, and a knockout victory at that,” Molina predicts, “it will catapult me to the stratosphere of the game.”

Robert Guerrero works the crowd as he awaits Keith Thurman
Mar 04, 2015 By Jason Scavone

Robert Guerrero was a ball of fire when he bounded into the ring for his public workout Wednesday on the floor of the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Guerrero-Workout-Day.jpg

Robert Guerrero made the ladies swoon on workout day ahead of his March 7 bout with Keith Thurman.

He dealt out rapid fire shadowboxing combinations as he glided over the canvas. Then he dealt the coup de grace—he whipped off his shirt. The shriek from the ladies in the crowd could’ve knocked you back a step.

“That’s what the fans come to see, to see what kind of shape I’m in,” Guerrero laughed. “Hey, you rip your shirt off and show them I’m ready to go.”

Ready he is for Saturday’s tilt against Keith Thurman on the debut Premier Boxing Champions card airing live on NBC at 8:30 p.m. ET from the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

If there’s a heightened buzz in the air for fight week, it’s something Guerrero, of all the fighters on the card, is perhaps the most accustomed to. He’s already been through it when he took on Floyd Mayweather Jr. in May 2013, and experienced all the hoopla that surrounds a big fight.

“It’s about staying focused, staying on your game, staying hungry,” Guerrero said. “The experience with Mayweather, one of the things he told me was ‘Hey, you know what, you’ve got to be ready.’ I thought yeah, I’m going to be ready for you. But really he was talking about the whole riff. Be ready for the media, be ready for the tour, be ready for everything that comes along with it. That’s where you’ve got to be ready for it, mentally.”

John Molina Jr. soaks in atmosphere ahead of fight with Adrien Broner
Mar 04, 2015 By Jason Scavone

John Molina Jr. stepped into the ring set up next to the MGM Grand race and sports book Wednesday afternoon, Ice Cube’s “You Can Do It” bumping behind him for public workouts ahead of Saturday’s throwdown with Adrien Broner.

John Molina Jr. is ready for Saturday's showdown with Adrien Broner.

Inspirational? Maybe. But there’s no doubt the 140-pound Molina is confident and relaxed for his co-headlining fight on the debut Premier Boxing Champions card from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Molina hyped up the already-buzzing crowd, tossing gloves and T-shirts from the ring. Mostly, he posed for pictures, soaking in the crowd’s admiration. The grind of camp is in the rearview mirror. Now the fun part comes.

“I can’t wait until fight night,” Molina said. “The hard work is done. Now it’s time to get to the fight and show what we did.”

As for the occasionally brash Broner, Molina said that all the talk, too, is now behind them.

“Anyone can say this, that or the other. The reality is it’s March 7; it’s me and him in the ring facing each other,” Molina said. “He’s great for the sport of boxing. I’m honored to be sharing the ring with him—until fight night. Then all respect goes out the window when it’s time to fight.”

Adrien Broner makes colorful appearance at MGM Grand
Mar 05, 2015 By Lem Satterfield

Adrien Broner was as colorful as ever as he stepped through the ropes of a ring set up near the MGM Grand sports book Wednesday.

Adrien Broner climbs into the ring next to the MGM Grand sports book Wednesday.

The three-time world champion danced around while wearing a black T-shirt with “About Billions” on it, fluorescent neon green sneakers and matching warm-up pants with a black stripe going down each leg.

Imagining Saturday’s 140-pound opponent John Molina Jr. before him, Broner fired a left uppercut—his glistening gold watch matching his pinkie ring—and a right cross that caused his gold bracelet to dance.

"I'm just chilling, man. It's fight time. We're two days to the weigh-in and three days to the fight, and I'm ready,” said Broner, whose bout in the debut of the Premier Boxing Champions on NBC represents his fourth time fighting at the MGM.

“Honestly, it really don't matter where you fight. As long as they show it on NBC, they could have this fight in a closet. As long as I handle my business, I'll be cool. But it's a great atmosphere. We're bringing boxing back on NBC as a worldwide sport, and the world is coming back to boxing. It's a great feeling."

Keith Thurman keeps his focus during public workout
Mar 05, 2015 By Jason Bracelin

Keith Thurman ducked an invisible foe and swung, his fists firing like bullets from a gun. He then flashed across the ring in tight semi-circles, exhaling with his punches, his face frozen in a look of intense concentration, his focus palpable.

Keith-Thurman-MGM.JPG

Keith Thurman looked ready for the ring during his public workout Wednesday at the MGM Grand.

If he were a racehorse, he’d need no blinders.

Thurman looked ready to go Wednesday as he worked out for a throng of fans in a ring set up near the MGM Grand sports book in Las Vegas, with Survivor’s “Burning Heart”—taken from the Rocky IV soundtrack, appropriately enough—providing the soundtrack for the training session.

Afterward, Thurman took a seat in the sports book’s VIP lounge. He learned that he’s a 7-to-1 betting favorite for his fight against Robert Guerrero at the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Saturday night.

“I guess I’m not betting on myself,” Thurman said with a grin as he considered the meager payout those odds would give him. But then his smile faded and he got serious.

“Robert Guerrero is a beaten fighter; I’m an unbeaten fighter,” Thurman said. “I’m younger, I’m faster, I’m stronger. I think (the betting line) is a little steep, but so far, the house favors Keith “One Time” Thurman until they see a reason not to.”

Those reasons won’t be forthcoming any time soon, to hear Thurman tell it.

“To win a round, you have to land punches. And every single time they hit me, I take a mental note of that,” Thurman says of his opponents. “And if they hit me once, I’m going hit them twice.”
