First mover advantage. Of course their sub base will eclipse competitors when they have a 10+ year headstart.

Competitors are also at a disadvantage (at present) because they have licensing agreements which prevent them from existing in multiple international jurisdictions (e.g. HBOMax in Europe).

All of those factors are transitory, and as they pass, so will NFLX's dominance.

this too, most shows need 2 seasons to really establish characters and get people invested, but flix bushes shyt in season 1 or 2. they and showtime need to merge, maybe we'll find the happy medium of 3-5 season shows, cuz showtime does the opposite, gives everything 6-10 seasons

Netflix went from mailing burned disks of movies to people while finding a unique way to bypass late fees that Blockbuster never could figure out. They then started a streaming service with a catalog of throwaway stuff from movie studios and now they transitioned from having a catalog of other studios stuff to creating a large library of content they created as their primary offerings. And they plan to spend 15-20 billion on content alone in the next year. Such a high budget AT&T had to fall back cause they cannot compete at that level of content creation. And they still have the best speed and interface that none of the other streamers are coming close to yet.
