I think the 8gb of gddr5 is just their attempt at 'future proofing' the console. it's expensive, but dumping more into things like multiple gpu's is even more expensive (and problematic when trying to squeeze it all in a small box). you give it more memory then it currently 'needs', but at least you'll have some breathing room in the future

Don't be ridiculous, by 2018 the PS4's power will grow exponentially, it will be able to render real life and a 1/2th scale version of the universe.
